Rising from the Atlantic at Madeira’s eastern tip, Ponta de São Lourenço is a striking peninsula where volcanic cliffs meet the restless ocean, creating an extraordinary setting for surfing. Here, the landscape is defined by ochre headlands, sculpted by wind and waves, and the ever-changing play of sunlight on basalt and turquoise water. The peninsula’s wild beauty, with sweeping views towards the Desertas Islands and the distant peaks of the Laurisilva forest, sets a dramatic stage for adventure. The atmosphere is both invigorating and serene, shaped by the salty breeze, the cries of seabirds, and the rhythmic pulse of the Atlantic. For those seeking a surfing destination that combines raw natural splendour with a sense of discovery, Ponta de São Lourenço offers an experience unlike anywhere else on Madeira.

Surfing at Ponta de São Lourenço is defined by contrasts: the quiet anticipation as you paddle out, the sudden rush as you catch a wave, and the moments of stillness between sets. The coastline here is exposed to consistent Atlantic swells, offering a variety of breaks suitable for different skill levels. The water is clear and cool, with the volcanic seabed lending a unique texture to the waves. Sessions typically last two to three hours, allowing time to adapt to the rhythm of the ocean and the changing light as clouds drift over the peninsula. The terrain alternates between sheltered coves and open stretches, providing both gentle rollers for beginners and more challenging sections for experienced surfers. The sound of the surf echoes off the cliffs, heightening the sense of immersion in this wild, elemental environment.

Local guides and instructors in Ponta de São Lourenço are passionate about sharing their knowledge of the region’s surf spots. These professionals are fully licensed and experienced, ensuring that safety is always a priority. High-quality wetsuits, boards, and leashes are provided, suited to the Atlantic’s variable conditions. Before entering the water, instructors offer detailed briefings on technique, local currents, and safety protocols, drawing on their deep familiarity with the peninsula’s unique features. The outdoor culture here is welcoming and inclusive, with a strong sense of respect for both the ocean and the environment. Access to the surf spots is straightforward, with meeting points near Caniçal and Machico, and logistics are carefully managed to ensure a smooth, enjoyable experience.

The best time for surfing in Ponta de São Lourenço is from late autumn through spring, when Atlantic swells are most consistent and the water temperature remains comfortable with a wetsuit. While the area is accessible to beginners thanks to the guidance of skilled instructors and the availability of gentler waves, a reasonable level of physical fitness is essential due to the dynamic conditions and the need for confident swimming. Intermediate and advanced surfers will find more powerful breaks and opportunities to refine their technique. The experience appeals to solo travellers, groups of friends, and families with older children, all drawn by the promise of adventure in a setting that feels both remote and welcoming.

it was a bit cloudy that day, overall this experience was amazing, staff were friendly, told a lot of things about Madeira
Kayaking and snorkiling was the best combo. It was fun, and highly enjoyable.
Nice to see different spots by kayak and get some explanations by the guide. A pity that we could’ve go to the edge of the peninsula because of the wind. But the cave in the other side of the bay was also very interesting.

It was nice but for me the staff did nothing as part of boat driver. There was no explanation about the kind of fish or fauna live inside this part of the island

My boyfriend and I did the half day kayak experience. It was over 60€ per person. The kayaking part was fun and we got interesting info about the island and the deserted part. However, the snorkeling was mwa. Only a bit of grey fish. After the kayaking part at 12:30 we were told that we could have lunch, which we expected (based on the pictures) much more of. For some people who did half a day tour (which was approximately 25€ cheaper) the tour ended now. In fact, it did for us too. We went for the lunch which was only a small toast and a small beer (not worth 25€, more like 10€ per person) and after that we asked whether we could take a boat earlier back to the marina. That was possible, so we went back at 14:30. I still don't really understand what was the purpose of the hours after 12:30 and would recommend you do to the shorter tour which was the same, but then without the "chilling time" afterwards.
