About the activity

Discover an ancient Arctic practice and enjoy a thrilling ride over the snow with some adorable canine guides on these amazing self-drive dog sledding excursions from Ivalo! Located 300 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, and right next to Lake Inari, Ivalo is a small village in Finnish Lapland, known as the gateway to Saariselkä. That beautiful area in Finland is known for its snowy winters and diverse Arctic wildlife, and it is the perfect place to experience diverse winter activities such as snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and of course, dog sledding.

Whan you book this self-drive dog sledding excursion from Ivalo, you'll have 2 options: a 1-hour and a 2-hour experience. During the first one, the total time you'll spend dog sledding will be around 30 minutes, while during the second one, you'll dog sled around Ivalo during 1 hour and 15 minutes. Once you book, you'll need to arrive at Primitif Aventure's headquarters, only about 4 kilometres north of Ivalo. There, you'll meet the expert musher (dog sled driver) who willl lead your experience.

Your instructor will introduce themselves and welcome you to the experience. Next, it's time to learn how to lead a dog team! Your instructor will teach you all the techniques and tricks to lead the dogs, turn, accelerate, slow down, and stop. The dogs, which are all descendants of Taimyr or Laika Nenets breeds, are highly trained and used to spending time with visitors, so all you need to worry about is giving them clear directions. Once you're ready, you'll set off on your 4 to 10-kilometre circuit on your own. If you are driving with a partner, you can take turns to drive and enjoy the ride in two very different ways. And when you return to the meeting point, you'll get to spend a wonderful moment with the dogs, cuddling and taking pictures with them.

Keep in mind that temperatures in the Arctic can range from 5 to -30 degrees Celsius. This means that you should come prepared with sturdy winter gear, including thermal or wool underlayers, a fleece or wool mid-layer, and windproof and waterproof outerwear (pants and jacket). You should also bring woollen socks, strong winterboots, a hat, a scarf, waterproof gloves, and anything else you might need (medication, snacks, etc.) to spend between 1 and 2 hours on this dog sledding experience in Ivalo.

Don't miss out on a wonderful, educational, and fun experience in the wild winter landscapes of Finnish Lapland. Book your self-drive dog sledding excursion from Ivalo today!
