Travel through the quiet, remote roads of Finnish Lapland and discover a wonderful natural phenomenon that has enchanted generations on this amazing Northern Lights hunt from Ivalo! Ivalo is a small village in northeastern Finland, located in the Finnish Lapland region. The town is surrounded by Arctic nature and is within the Northern Lights oval, which means that every year, from September to April (approximately), it is witness to one of the most mystical and aesthetically pleasing natural phenomena in the world. The Aurora Borealis, or more commonly known as the Northern Lights, is a phenomenon that occurs when the Earth's atmosphere interacts with the sun's particles, resulting in colourful, dancing lights in the night sky, visible from areas with low light pollution. Finnish Lapland, and Ivalo's surroundings, are perfect for observing this wonderful natural light show.
On the day of your snowmobile excursion from Ivalo, your instructor offers a transportation service from various locations around Ivalo, Inari, and Saariselkä (please check special terms). You can also arrive at the Northern Lights Riders headquarters by yourself. Once there, your instructor will give you a thorough safety briefing and lead you to the minibus that will drive you around all night.
Once everyone is comfortably installed, it's time to go! You'll spend approximately 3.5 hours travelling through 120 to 200 kilometres of the Arctic wilderness that surrounds Ivalo, searching for the dancing lights in the sky. Now, as mentioned above, the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, so there is always a chance that you won't be able to find them, even if your instructor does their best to bring you to the most likely sighting spots. But if you find them, you'll make 3 to 6 stops, so you can admire them, and so the expert photographer at Northern Lights Riders can take wonderful photos for you to take home. You can also rent a high-quality camera and tripod from your instructor, so you can take your own photos.
Keep in mind that temperatures in the Arctic can range from 5 to -30 degrees Celsius, so to prepare to go Northern Lights hunting from Ivalo, your instructor recommends bringing wool or thermal under layers, good middle layers, a winter jacket, and even waterproof pants that you can wear under the thermal suit if it's very cold. You can also bring your own snacks, a water bottle, and anything else you might need (medication, extra layers, etc.) to spend around 3 hours exploring the Arctic wilderness of Finnish Lapland.
Don't miss out on one of the most iconic experiences available in the Arctic and take advantage of the expert locals who will help you find the Earth's most amazing light show. Book your Northern Lights hunt from Ivalo today!
