To chase the Northern Lights in Ivalo is to step into the heart of Finnish Lapland, where the Arctic Circle’s wild beauty sets the stage for one of nature’s most mesmerising spectacles. Ivalo, nestled on the banks of the Ivalo River and surrounded by the untouched wilderness of the Inari region, offers a front-row seat to the aurora borealis. Here, the vast, snow-blanketed forests, frozen lakes, and the gentle slopes of nearby Saariselkä create an atmosphere of serene anticipation as the sky transforms each night. The crisp air carries the scent of pine and woodsmoke, and the silence is broken only by the soft crunch of snow underfoot. This is a place where the interplay of darkness and light becomes a living canvas, drawing travellers from around the world to witness the Northern Lights in their purest form.

Embarking on a Northern Lights chase in Ivalo is an immersive journey through Arctic landscapes, guided by the rhythm of the seasons and the subtle cues of the night sky. The experience often begins in the early evening, as local guides lead small groups away from the village lights into the deep quiet of the taiga. Routes may follow winding trails through snow-laden birch and spruce forests, or venture onto the open expanses of Lake Inari, where the horizon stretches unbroken beneath the stars. The duration of a typical aurora hunt ranges from three to five hours, balancing moments of quiet observation with the thrill of anticipation as green, violet, and pink ribbons flicker overhead. The terrain is gentle but can be challenging in deep snow or sub-zero temperatures, adding a sense of adventure to the calm. Between bursts of celestial colour, the darkness is profound, punctuated by the distant calls of Arctic wildlife and the soft glow of campfires.

Local guides in Ivalo are seasoned professionals, deeply familiar with the rhythms of Lapland’s wilderness and the science behind the aurora. They provide essential gear, such as thermal overalls, boots, and headlamps, ensuring comfort and safety in the harsh Arctic climate. Their expertise extends to reading weather patterns and aurora forecasts, maximising the chances of a successful sighting. Safety is paramount, with clear briefings and support throughout the excursion. The outdoor culture here is rooted in respect for nature and a spirit of quiet camaraderie, reflected in the careful planning and warm hospitality of each guide. Transport to and from the best viewing locations is arranged, allowing participants to focus fully on the experience.

It was a truly unique experience. Although the Aurora was less visible, we still saw it. And that is essential.
