To chase the Northern Lights in Kirkenes is to step into the heart of Arctic Norway, where the wild landscapes of Finnmark meet the Russian border and the Barents Sea. This remote town, perched on the edge of the Varanger Peninsula, offers one of Europe’s most reliable vantage points for witnessing the aurora borealis. Here, the sky stretches wide and unspoiled, far from the glow of city lights, revealing a canvas where green, violet and pink ribbons dance across the polar night. The crisp air carries the scent of pine and snow, while the silence of the tundra is broken only by the crunch of boots or the distant call of a raven. Kirkenes is not just a gateway to the Northern Lights; it is a place where Sami heritage, Russian influences and Norwegian outdoor culture blend, creating a unique atmosphere for adventure.

Embarking on a Northern Lights chase in Kirkenes is an immersive journey through Arctic wilderness. Guided excursions often begin in the early evening, as the last traces of daylight fade over the Pasvik Valley or along the icy shores of the Bøkfjord. Travellers may traverse snow-laden forests by minibus, snowmobile or even dog sled, following routes that wind through birch groves and over frozen lakes. The experience is a balance of anticipation and tranquillity: moments of quiet waiting beneath a starlit sky are punctuated by the sudden, breathtaking appearance of the aurora. The terrain is varied, from gentle hills to open tundra, and the cold is tangible—dry, sharp, invigorating. Each outing lasts several hours, with guides choosing locations based on weather and solar activity, maximising the chances of a spectacular display. The contrast between the warmth of a campfire and the icy vastness around you heightens every sensation.

Local guides in Kirkenes are seasoned professionals, deeply familiar with the rhythms of the Arctic and the science behind the aurora. They provide thermal suits, boots and headlamps, ensuring comfort and safety in sub-zero conditions. Guides share insights into local wildlife, Sami traditions and the natural phenomena that shape life above the Arctic Circle. Their expertise extends to reading weather patterns and solar forecasts, allowing for flexible itineraries that adapt to changing conditions. Transport is reliable, and small group sizes ensure a personalised experience. The outdoor culture in Kirkenes values respect for nature, quiet observation and a spirit of shared discovery.

The Northern Lights season in Kirkenes runs from late September to early April, with the clearest skies and longest nights between November and March. Our female musher is very considerate and has excellent dogsledding skills. She told us when there's a sharp turn on the right side, a steep down hill road and etc. So we were able to prepare for them, and keep ourselves sitting on the sledge when they happened. I asked her a lot of questions such as the training of Husky for dogsledding, Norwegian culture. She was very patient to answer all the questions asked. So I have some knowledge about Norwegian culture, Husky dogsledding, and husky characteristics. The weather was very good for a scenic dog sledge trip in a beautiful landscape. I enjoyed the ride and nature. It's my first time to drink warm juice during the break. It's yummy. Now I know it's a Norwegian outdoor drink. I really appreciate that the female musher have done for me during the entire dogsledding ride. I have a wonderful time, and experience. I forgot her name though.

The dog sled experience was a lot of fun. We did the night time version and were out for 2 hours, stopped in the middle for a fire pit and warm juice. Dogs were excited and eager to run and the guide was knowledgeable with great stories to tell.

We were originally booked for the Northern Lights Safari, but changed to the afternoon trip. As our trip was in January, it was still dark, but too cloudy for any lights. We still had a lot of fun!
