To understand the allure of dog sledding in Kirkenes, one must first imagine the unique character of Norway’s far northeast. Nestled just a few kilometres from the Russian border and the Barents Sea, Kirkenes sits at the edge of the Arctic wilderness, where the land is sculpted by fjords, frozen lakes, and endless taiga. Here, the winter sun hangs low, casting a blue-gold glow across the snow, while the silence is broken only by the crunch of sled runners and the eager barks of huskies. This remote corner of Finnmark is renowned for its pristine landscapes, Northern Lights displays, and a culture deeply connected to the rhythms of the Arctic. For those seeking an authentic adventure, dog sledding in Kirkenes offers a rare opportunity to explore the wilds of Lapland in the company of skilled mushers and their loyal teams.

Embarking on a dog sledding tour in Kirkenes is an immersive experience that blends excitement with tranquillity. Typical routes wind through birch forests, across frozen rivers like the Pasvikelva, and over rolling tundra, with panoramic views stretching towards the Russian hills and the Varangerfjord. Depending on the chosen itinerary, outings can last from a couple of hours to full-day expeditions, each offering a different perspective on the Arctic landscape. As the sled glides over compacted snow, you feel the cold air on your face, the rhythmic pull of the dogs, and the subtle vibration of the runners beneath you. There are moments of pure exhilaration as the team accelerates over open stretches, contrasted with peaceful interludes where only the soft patter of paws and the whisper of wind fill the air. The interplay of light and shadow on the snow, the scent of pine, and the distant calls of ravens create a sensory tapestry unique to this northern frontier.

Our female musher is very considerate and has excellent dogsledding skills. She told us when there's a sharp turn on the right side, a steep down hill road and etc. So we were able to prepare for them, and keep ourselves sitting on the sledge when they happened. I asked her a lot of questions such as the training of Husky for dogsledding, Norwegian culture. She was very patient to answer all the questions asked. So I have some knowledge about Norwegian culture, Husky dogsledding, and husky characteristics. The weather was very good for a scenic dog sledge trip in a beautiful landscape. I enjoyed the ride and nature. It's my first time to drink warm juice during the break. It's yummy. Now I know it's a Norwegian outdoor drink. I really appreciate that the female musher have done for me during the entire dogsledding ride. I have a wonderful time, and experience. I forgot her name though.

The dog sled experience was a lot of fun. We did the night time version and were out for 2 hours, stopped in the middle for a fire pit and warm juice. Dogs were excited and eager to run and the guide was knowledgeable with great stories to tell.

We were originally booked for the Northern Lights Safari, but changed to the afternoon trip. As our trip was in January, it was still dark, but too cloudy for any lights. We still had a lot of fun!
