To understand the allure of a Northern Lights Chase in Saariselkä, one must first appreciate the unique character of Finnish Lapland. Nestled deep within the Arctic Circle, Saariselkä is a gateway to the wild heart of the Urho Kekkonen National Park, where ancient fells and silent forests stretch toward the Russian border. Here, the sky opens wide above snow-laden pines, and the air carries the crisp scent of winter birch. Saariselkä’s remote location, far from the glow of city lights, creates some of the clearest, darkest skies in Europe—an ideal canvas for the aurora borealis. The village itself, with its welcoming lodges and Sami heritage, offers a blend of comfort and authenticity, making it a perfect base for those seeking the magic of the Northern Lights.

Embarking on a Northern Lights Chase in Saariselkä is an immersive journey through Arctic landscapes. Guided excursions often begin in the early evening, as the last traces of daylight fade and the temperature drops, sharpening the senses. Travellers might traverse snowy trails by minibus, snowmobile, or even reindeer sleigh, venturing into the untouched wilderness around Kaunispää Fell or along the banks of the Ivalo River. The terrain alternates between open tundra and dense, frost-coated forest, each step muffled by thick snow. The anticipation builds in the quiet, broken only by the crunch of boots or the distant call of an owl. When the aurora appears, ribbons of green, violet, and pink ripple across the sky, illuminating the landscape in an otherworldly glow. The experience is both tranquil and exhilarating, a rare moment of connection with nature’s most elusive spectacle.

Local guides in Saariselkä are seasoned professionals, deeply familiar with the rhythms of Lapland’s wilderness and the science behind the aurora. They monitor weather and solar activity, choosing routes that maximise the chance of sightings while ensuring safety and comfort. Participants are provided with thermal overalls, boots, and headlamps, essential for the Arctic night. Many guides share stories of Sami traditions and local folklore, adding cultural depth to the adventure. Safety is paramount: all excursions follow strict protocols, with emergency equipment and clear communication throughout. Saariselkä’s outdoor culture values respect for nature and responsible exploration, ensuring that each Northern Lights tour is both secure and environmentally conscious.

The best time to chase the Northern Lights in Saariselkä is from late August to early April, when nights are longest and the skies are clearest. We were first equipped with overalls to make sure we weren’t going to be cold in sub zero temperatures. We were taken in a sleigh, pulled by a snowmobile onto a frozen lake from where we tried to catch the Northern lights that kept coming and going . It was amazing that we could stand on a frozen lake let alone be on it with a snowmobile and sleigh full of people. We then headed to a kota where, around a fire we had soup and sausages. It was a great atmosphere in there. Before leaving we were able to pet the two reindeers who live on the Aurora Island. It was great fun.

Though the weather was cloudy, we still went along. We crossed the little bridge at the start of the trails and then entered the forest, without any torches. Our eyes quickly adapted to this and it was a great experience. We followed tracks but also snowshoed through fresh snow. The walk is uphill, and at the highest point we got to, we were given some hot berry juice before heading back down. It was a magical experience.
