Muonio is a town situated in the western part of Finland. It is part of the larger Lapland region, known for its pristine nature, vast forests, and numerous lakes. The Muonio River flows through the municipality, and it serves as a natural border with Sweden. It is also located approximately 45-50 km away from Ylläs, a popular winter resort destination. Dog sledding is the perfect activity for discovering the versatile Lapland wilderness.
For this excursion, you can do a half or full-day expedition! You will start by meeting your experienced guide at the husky farm in Muonio. They will introduce you to the adorable and friendly Alaskan Huskies, native to this region. The tour begins with a brief safety demonstration and a dog mushing lesson, so you feel well equipped to drive your own sled. Each person will drive a team of 4-5 huskies. Once you have put on your warm Arctic clothing, the adventure begins!
Following the guide, you will venture out into the snowy forest surrounding the area. You will drive your energetic team through the winter wonderland, passing diverse landscapes, including fells (tunturi) and wetlands. This exciting excursion will immerse you fully in Arctic life and make you feel like a local. After taking in the breathtaking scenery, you will return to the camp. Some delicious cookie snacks or lunch with hot drinks will be served while you warm up. There will also be time to play with your new furry friends, while the guide shares stories about life as a husky musher and the history of this region. At the end of the day, you will leave the kennels with life-long memories!
