About the activity

Come and see the whales on an expedition in the Bay of Biscay and enjoy an unforgettable experience setting off from Hendaye!

Whale-watching in Hendaye begins in the refreshing sea air of the Basque-Landes coast. The Gouf de Capbreton, a vertiginous underwater canyon plunging to a depth of over 4,000 metres, causes nutrients to rise to the surface, creating a veritable feeding ground for marine mammals. It is precisely this exceptional geological feature that makes this area one of the best in Europe for marine biodiversity. You’ll take your place on board the Atalaya, a Blue Flag-certified vessel, to set off in search of wildlife.

The day is structured around a respectful and scientific approach. As soon as you leave the harbour, the nature guide and the team of biologists will share their in-depth knowledge with you. With your eyes fixed on the horizon, you’ll scan the waves in search of blue and white dolphins, bottlenose dolphins or pilot whales. Thanks to hydrophones submerged in the water, you’ll hear the animals’ vocalisations, whistles and clicks live. The team, operating under WCA Responsible Whale Watching certification, ensures that the boat is navigated in a manner suited to the behaviour of the wildlife, without any feeding taking place. The expedition takes on a participatory dimension, as your photographs and observations are sent to the Pelagis Observatory in La Rochelle to contribute to national research.

This boat trip guarantees optimal comfort on a spacious boat equipped with toilets.

Trips are organised from April to October to maximise your chances of spotting magnificent migratory species such as the fin whale. Book your whale-watching expedition in Hendaye now and play an active part in the study of wildlife!

We went for a day's trip with Explore Ocean to see dolphins and whales. It was a fantastic and deeply touching experience. After hours of watching and sailing there finally appeared hundreds of dolphins, coming near, playing with the boat, newborn ones, jumping ones.. I feel blessed to have been there, in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by wild animals.
