Booking a 4x4 excursion in Raiatea allows you to venture deep into the heart of French Polynesia’s sacred island, far from the well-trodden paths along the coast. As you leave Uturoa, the lush, mountainous landscape reveals verdant valleys covered with banana trees, papaya trees and pineapple plantations. The Faaroa viewpoint offers a breathtaking panoramic view of French Polynesia’s only navigable river and the indented bay of the same name. Further south, the Taputapuatea marae, the cradle of Ma’ohi culture and a major UNESCO World Heritage Site, bears witness to the island’s central role in the great voyages across the vast Pacific Ocean. This immersive experience seamlessly blends untamed tropical landscapes with centuries-old history.
The adventure continues with immersive experiences that showcase local expertise. At the Raiatea Pearl farm, visitors discover the meticulous work involved in grafting and harvesting Tahitian pearl oysters. The tour then heads to a traditional fa’a’apu in Opoa, where permaculture is perfectly suited to the tropical climate. A practical demonstration showcases the art of cracking open coconuts and their many everyday uses. Tastings of fresh seasonal fruit such as papaya, banana and passion fruit alternate with a stop at an artisanal honey farm to sample local honey. Each 4x4 journey is punctuated by the local guide’s fascinating explanations of Polynesian heritage.
This 4x4 excursion in Raiatea is suitable for all travellers aged 6 and over, with no specific fitness requirements. The tour is designed for small groups of up to 8 participants, ensuring a personalised experience with the guide and the producers. The journey takes place in an off-road 4x4 vehicle with a driver-guide, allowing access to tracks closed to the general public. All fruit and honey tastings, as well as the visits mentioned in the itinerary, are fully included in the package.
