About the activity

Between August and November, meeting the magnificent humpback whales in Tahiti is an unmissable experience. After a long migration from Antarctica, they return to Polynesian waters to breed and give birth. Mobydick Diving invites you to join them in the area between Paea and Mataiea to look for these incredible cetaceans in a quieter zone, allowing for respectful, passive encounters in accordance with regulations set by the DIREN (Department of the Environment).

As the search for whales can take some time, Mobydick Diving’s boat, Stenella, is equipped with a canopy to protect you from sun and rain. It also features a hydrophone system, allowing you to listen to the haunting songs of male whales—an unforgettable experience. The boat can accommodate up to 12 passengers, but for your comfort, you can choose your trip to be limited to 6 people or even privatised.

If whales are spotted, an observation phase begins, allowing you to admire them from the boat and assess whether entering the water is possible. This depends on the whales’ behaviour, sea conditions, and your swimming ability. Throughout the excursion, your guide—an expert in marine life—will share fascinating insights into the whales’ lives and their songs. During each in-water session (between one and four may be possible depending on the day), the instructor will always be by your side to ensure that this snorkelling experience with whales takes place in complete safety.

Whether or not whales are encountered, this boat trip in Tahiti offers the chance to enjoy the island from the sea, its stunning landscapes, and the other wildlife that may be spotted, including dolphins, birds, turtles, and even sharks. There’s no reason to be disappointed, as Mobydick Tahiti’s experienced guides will do everything they can to maximise your chances of seeing whales.

Don’t hesitate—book this whale-watching boat excursion in Tahiti now and immerse yourself in the unspoilt nature of Polynesia!

We were so lucky the day we went out to have the opportunity to swim with a very curious junior humpback whale! He stayed with us for about 20-25 minutes and it was incredible. We were also the only boat with the whale at the time. I think it's important to emphasize (1) being comfortable snorkeling fast for quite a distance in open ocean is key to getting to the whales to enjoy your time with them; and (2) the type of contact we had this day is not the norm but, perhaps, the exception. We had an opportunity on two other occasions (with two other outfitters) to swim with whales and both times we ended up in the water but didn't get close to the whales, and we had friends who did a whale swim with yet another outfitter and didn't end up in the water although they saw whales from the boat. Any opportunity to see whales swimming in the open water is a unique opportunity and well worth it.

Just incredible! Exceeded all my expectations. Our group was able to hang out with two juvenile whales for the day. There were no other tour groups around until we were ready to leave. It was such a special day. Our captain and guide were so lovely to us and so respectful of the whales and the environment. We felt so comfortable and taken care of. Thank you so much!

This is a great whale tour, it's on a quieter part of the coast so there's less boats around, we had it to ourselves, and managed to have a lovely swim with a mother and calf. highly recommended.

We found a whale and could get into water. However, since the number of people that can be in the water simultaneously is limited, the time that each of us spent snorkeling in the water was actually quite short, maybe 20 minutes together. Out of that, you see the whale clearly for maybe 20 seconds, the rest of the time it is just a distant shadow.
