Activity description

Join an expedition to Borebukti Bay on the search for Svalbard's walruses!

The mighty walrus can often be observed in these parts of the waters West of Longyearbyen, either lounging on a beach, floating on an iceberg or paddling around the shallow waters. By RIB boat, you will be able to explore the waters in search of these great marine mammals without disturbing their ecosystem.

The adventure begins when your guide picks you up from your accommodation. Then, depending on the time of year and choice of boat, you will either head off to get your thermal gear, or you will head straight to Longyearbyen Harbour, where you will board your motor boat and set off into the icy water.

The itinerary itself is a spectacle: skid past huge glaciers and icebergs, and enjoy the wide panoramic views over the Arctic Ocean. As you cross the Isfjord, make sure to keep an eye out for other wildlife too. Overhead, you may spot some of Svalbard's resident birdlife, while on the surface of the water, you might catch the tail of a whale - the waters here are galore with surprises!

Once arrived at Borebukti Bay, your guide will scout out the walruses for you to observe from the boat. On land, these big-tusked mammals flap about comically, but in the water, they transform into the most beautiful animals. Some might come and swim along beside you, showing off their graceful strokes as they do so.

You will be provided with food and hot drinks aboard the boat to enjoy as you observe the animals in their natural habitat. Then, once you've had your eyes full of the walruses, it will be time to head back to the mainland, to your accommodations.

Come aboard for an exciting day with Svalbard's marine wildlife!
