The Sami, the first inhabitants of Scandinavia, have lived side by side with reindeer for centuries. These Indigenous people have a fascinating culture that is truly unmissable when visiting Northern Norway. And what better way to discover it than by joining an excursion to a Sami camp near Tromsø? There, you will enjoy full cultural immersion with reindeer sledding, a taste of traditional food, and enchanting folk songs. Altogether, you will spend around 3 hours at the camp, in the company not only of your passionate Sami hosts but also of a herd of nearly 200 reindeer!
This reindeer sledding adventure near Tromsø promises unforgettable moments, starting with the chance to feed the reindeer upon arrival. You will be able to observe these magnificent animals up close – creatures that have always shared their lives with the Sami. If you are interested, you can even try your hand at lasso throwing (of course, not on a real reindeer). Afterwards, depending on the option you chose, you will set off on a reindeer sled ride lasting either 10–15 minutes or 25–30 minutes. Comfortably seated in your sled, you can fully enjoy the snowy landscape around you, whether you are travelling as a couple, with family, or with friends.
To round off the experience in the best possible way, you will be invited into a traditional tent known as a lavvu, where a warm campfire awaits. There, you will be served a hot drink and some biscuits, followed by a traditional Sami dish called bidos (a reindeer stew). As you eat, your guides will share stories about Sami culture, and you will be treated to the haunting beauty of joik folk songs. By the end of your visit, you will not only have learned about the Sami people and their traditions, but you will also be eager to tell everyone back home about this wonderful reindeer sledding experience from Tromsø!
