Activity description

Head to Gansbaai for cage diving excursions in the Great White's favourite feeding ground - Dyer Island...

Prepared to get close enough to count the number of teeth in a  Great White's grin? Learn more about the ocean's most misunderstood apex predator with cage diving experiences off the coast of South Africa's. A unique experience run and operated by a team of expert marine biologists, understand the true nature of the Great White and why we should help to preserve its natural habitat at Dyer Island, near Gansbaai.

White shark cage diving excursions to Dyer Island begin at the picturesque Kleinbaai Harbour near Gansbaai. Dyer Island is home to a permanent colony of penguins located 20-minute boat ride from the shore - whilst Geyser Island is home to a permanent colony of approximately 40,000 Cape fur seals. The channel between these islands is renowned worldwide to be the best place to observe, encounter and cage dive with the great white shark and is known as "Shark Alley".

Meeting at the aptly named Great White House in Kleinbaai for your full day great white shark cage diving excursion. You will receive breakfast or lunch and register your wetsuit size before receiving a pre-trip safety briefing about what to expect during the trip and a biological background on great white sharks. Boarding the 44-seater Slashfin cage diving boat, travel to Dyer Island (approximately 20 minutes) where you will kit up and be lowered into the cage. The average anchor time is 2 hours, but this depends on shark activity, conditions, as well as the number of divers. Weather permitting, you will take a quick trip through the infamous Shark Alley and return to shore for a debrief in the Great White House and a celebratory beverage to toast the occasion!

You can go shark cage diving in Gansbaai throughout the year, but the water visibility is best (clearest) between March and September. Please bear in mind that wildlife does not obey commands and viewings of white sharks cannot be guaranteed for every excursion.
