Activity description

Work as a team to tackle the rapids of this rafting excursion in the Picos de Europa National Park. You can share this experience with your family and friends.

Picking up power as it races through Picos de Europa National Park, the rivers are renowned for their unexpected twists and turns that make it one of the top rafting destinations in northern Spain. Travel from its source deep in the Cantabrian Mountains on this all-or-nothing whitewater adventure!

You can choose between three different excursions: Cares river, Deva river or Sella river. The Cares is a category III-IV river that runs from León in Picos de Europa National Park to the Cantabrian Sea. A 54km route that passes through Asturias, this tributary of the Deva, also has its own walking trail ‘Ruta del Cares’ that runs parallel through the many gorges, caves, lakes, forests and peaks.

The Deva is a category II-III river that creates a natural frontier between Asturias and Cantabria. A 64km route from Fuente Dé into the Cantabrian Sea, it flows through Picos de Europa National Park where it forms impressive gorge systems and ravines like La Hermida.

Finally, The Sella river is a category III river that starts at the ‘Fuente del Infierno’ in the Picos de Europa National Park, it runs through the Austrian towns of Ponga, Amieva, Cangas de Onis, Pares and Ribadesella on a 66km route into the Cantabrian Sea.

One of the three most powerful descents in the mainland, the Cares River is suitable for adventurous beginners and confident swimmers. A category III-IV section, it is only navigable at certain times of the year depending on water levels and weather. Please refer to the river classification below.

Class III: Rapids with moderate, irregular waves, tight passages, strong eddies and current effects.
Class IV: Intense, powerful but predictable rapids requiring precise boat handling in turbulent water.

Course of events

Meet your rafting team at the activity base in Arriondas for this whitewater rafting excursion in Picos de Europa National Park. Considered one of the wildest rivers in the area, your instructor will walk you through the paddle techniques, commands, and safety features of the tour before you set off on a shuttle to the embankment area. Suitable for adventurous beginners, this half-day rafting adventure is designed to test your teamwork on a two-hour trip down a category III-IV section of the river.

Led by your in-boat guide, you will paddle together to avoid large obstructions, squeeze through narrow channels, tackle rapids and avoid swamping waves – getting totally drenched along the way. A rewarding decent that feels like a white-knuckle ride – it is one of the most exciting and challenging routes, ideal for whitewater junkies and regular paddlers. Once you have completed the section of the Cares, you will return back to the activity base in time for a hot shower and some light refreshments.
