Join an expert and explore the stunning Arctic landscapes of Swedish Lapland at night on this wonderful Northern Lights and Arctic Nature experience from Abisko! The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are a natural phenomenon that occurs when the Earth's atmosphere and some particles from the Sun interact. This results in green, purple, pink, or red undulating lights in the night sky. This awe-inspiring phenomenon is only visible within the Aurora Oval, which, for the most part, overlaps the Arctic Circle. Abisko, located in Sweden's Lapland region, is the perfect place to embark on a Northern Lights chase, since the village is surrounded by Arctic nature where light pollution is at a minimum, which is necessary to observe the aurora.
On the day of your Northern Lights chase from Abisko, you'll need to arrive at the Abisko-net Hostel or be picked up at the STF Tourist Station at least 15 minutes before the start of the activity. There, you'll meet the expert instructor who will drive you around Swedish Lapland's Arctic wilderness through the night. They'll explain a few safety recommendations and give you a clear breakdown of the itinerary for the night. Finally, before leaving, they will distribute thermal overalls and warm boots to keep you safe from the Arctic cold.
Once you're comfortably installed in the van, it's time to go! You'll drive away from Abisko and into the darkening wilderness, following real-time aurora conditions to find the best spots for observation. Your instructor will explain how the Northern Lights work, why they only appear in the Aurora Oval, what are the Arctic ecosystems at the stops you make, and more about the nature found in the stunning landscapes of Swedish Lapland. Now, your instructor can't guarantee that you'll see the Northern Lights, since they are an uncontrollable natural phenomenon. However, exploring the Arctic landscapes near Abisko will already be an incredible experience.
Keep in mind that Arctic temperatures can range from 5 to -30 degrees Celsius. This is why, even though your instructor includes some winter equipment, you should come prepared with quality winter gear, including thermal underlayers, fleece or wool mid-layers, and a good jacket. You should also bring a hat, a scarf, gloves, snow boots, and anything else you may need (medication, snacks, etc.) to spend an amazing 4 hours on this Northern Lights and Arctic Nature experience from Abisko.
Don't miss out on a wonderful adventure in the breathtaking landscapes of Swedish Lapland with an expert who'spassionate about the landscapes and phenomena you'll explore. Book your Northern Lights and Arctic nature experience from Abisko today!
