To chase the Northern Lights in Abisko is to step into one of the world’s most renowned natural theatres. Nestled in Swedish Lapland, just north of the Arctic Circle, Abisko National Park is celebrated for its clear skies and minimal light pollution, making it a prime destination for aurora hunters. The village of Abisko, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Scandinavian Mountains and the frozen expanse of Lake Torneträsk, offers a unique blend of wild beauty and tranquillity. Here, the crisp winter air carries the scent of pine and snow, and the silence is broken only by the distant howl of wind or the crunch of boots on powder. The region’s latitude and microclimate create ideal conditions for witnessing the aurora borealis, drawing travellers from across the globe to experience this celestial spectacle.

Setting out on a Northern Lights chase in Abisko is an immersive journey through Arctic landscapes. Guided excursions often begin in the early evening, as the last traces of daylight fade and the sky deepens to indigo. Participants travel by minibus, snowshoe, or even snowmobile, venturing away from the village lights into the heart of the national park. The terrain varies from open lakeshores to snow-laden forests and gentle mountain slopes, each offering a different perspective on the night sky. The experience is a study in contrasts: the stillness of the wilderness is punctuated by the sudden, silent dance of green and violet lights overhead. The cold is invigorating, yet the anticipation and warmth of shared excitement keep spirits high. Depending on conditions, the chase may last several hours, with guides adapting routes to maximise the chances of a sighting.

Abisko’s local guides are seasoned professionals, deeply familiar with the region’s weather patterns and geography. They provide essential equipment such as thermal suits, boots, and headlamps, ensuring comfort and safety in sub-zero temperatures. Each excursion is carefully planned, with real-time monitoring of aurora forecasts and cloud cover to select the best viewing locations. Safety briefings and clear instructions are standard, reflecting the area’s strong outdoor culture and commitment to responsible tourism. Guides share insights into the science and folklore of the Northern Lights, enriching the experience with local knowledge and stories. Transport logistics are seamless, with pick-up points in Abisko village and, in some cases, nearby Kiruna.

The Northern Lights season in Abisko typically runs from late November to early April, when long nights and stable weather offer optimal viewing opportunities. While no previous experience is required, participants should be prepared for cold conditions and short walks on snowy or uneven ground. The activity is accessible to most ages and fitness levels, though a reasonable level of mobility is recommended. Couples, families, solo travellers, and photography enthusiasts all find something to cherish here, whether it’s the thrill of the chase or the serenity of the Arctic night.

A great activity. The location is super if you're staying in or near Abisko to do local dogsledding, and the times are great if you take the morning tour so you've still got loads of time in the day for other things.

Everyone got to climb 2 or 3 times on two routes to try out ice climbing. Honestly this was enough work for our muscles! The ice was located next to a busy street.

A really magical experience sledding through the stunning snowy landscape with very friendly, and happy dogs. The dogs were well cared for, and loved being cuddled in between their shifts. They also couldn’t wait to run! Our group loved every second of it.
