Paddle in a group to tackle one of Scotland’s most exciting grade III rivers on this whitewater rafting excursion in the Great Glen. One of the only places you can raft all year round, during the summer, the Garry River is given its signature rapids and regulated by an upstream dam, meaning water levels are never an issue, and the route's signature bumps and bends are always navigable.
Based in Lochaber, the 'Outdoor Capital' of the UK, the activity centre is on the shores of Loch Oich - only 10 miles from local landmarks like Loch Ness and Fort Augustus. The River Garry runs through the Great Glen and Fort William, a region renowned for its iconic lakes and wild landscape in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. A two-hour drive from Inverness, Citylink run regular services from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Oban and Skye. You can also get a bus directly from Glasgow Airport to Fort William (twice a day in the summer).
On the day of your white water rafting experience on the River Garry, you will need to meet your expert Active Hights instructor at Glen Garry at least 10 minutes before the activity is set to start. Your instructor recommends leaving with ample time to arrive at the meeting point, since the roads can get crowded. Your instructor will distribute the wetsuits, life jackets, helmets, paddles, and any other necessary equipment, and let you gear up.
You'll learn exactly how the experience will work and how you'll need to work with the people on your raft to navigate the obstacles in the river. Next, you'll head down to the embankment area, where you’ll leave the safety of the shore and start practising your paddling technique. With a lead guide in each raft, they’ll help you steer and navigate a series of fast-flowing rapids and white water, dodging rocks and obstructions along the way. Working as a team to ensure you all stay safely in the raft – be prepared to get wet as you slide down natural toboggans, slalom through rocky intersections and bounce along the banks, working your way to the end of the course where you’ll be transported back to the activity base.
The River Garry is a fantastic, fun and adventurous river with great grade 3 and 4 rapids. The main reason for it being so popular is due to the releases of water from the dam every week from April until October. Class III rapids have moderate, irregular waves, strong eddies and powerful currents. As for Class IV rapids, you'll find intense, powerful, but predictable rapids requiring precise boat handling in turbulent water.
Don't miss out on the adrenaline-filled experience of a lifetime and enjoy getting wet in the Scottish Highlands. Book your white water rafting excursion on the River Garry near Fort William today!
