What are the activities to do in Rethymno?
Discover Rethymno: A Hidden Gem on Crete’s Wild Coast
Rethymno (or Réthymnon), nestled between the rugged White Mountains and the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, is one of Crete's most atmospheric towns. Less known than Chania or Heraklion, it offers a slower, more soulful rhythm — a blend of Venetian architecture, Ottoman echoes, and timeless Cretan hospitality. Whether you’re wandering through its flower-lined alleyways or watching the sun dip behind a fortress wall, Rethymno is a place that rewards unhurried exploration.
But beyond its historic heart lies a world of outdoor adventures: wild gorges, secret beaches, and sun-baked plateaus just waiting to be discovered.
Top Outdoor Adventures in Rethymno
Hiking & Canyoning through the Kourtaliotiko Gorge
One of the most dramatic gorges in Crete, Kourtaliotiko is carved deep between towering cliffs south of Rethymno. As you walk beneath eagle nests and past crashing waterfalls, you’ll feel the raw force of nature. The trail leads down to Preveli Beach, where palm trees grow wild at the mouth of a turquoise river. Bring swimwear — a dip here is almost irresistible.
Snorkelling and Sea Kayaking along the South Coast
Paddle past secluded bays, dive into underwater worlds, and picnic on remote pebble beaches only accessible by sea. The coast near Plakias and Damnoni is particularly inviting for aquatic adventures.
Water Activities from Rethymno Beach
Back in town, the long sandy beach that stretches for kilometres east of the old port is a favourite for water sports. Winds are usually gentle in summer, making this an excellent spot for beginner water skiing sessions, an adventurous parasailing flight, or some exciting and relaxed jet ski rentals or stand up paddling rentals at the beach.
Alternatively, you can opt for a fascinating scuba diving experience, or some amazing boat tours along the coast!
Land Activities
If you wish to explore more, you can choose a Jeep Safari, a relaxed-paced e-Bike tour, or an exciting Quad Safari!
Best Time to Visit Rethymno
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are ideal, with mild weather, fewer crowds, and vibrant landscapes. Spring brings wildflowers and gushing rivers in the gorges, while autumn sea temperatures remain wonderfully warm for swimming and kayaking.
Summer (July to August) offers long beach days and lively village festivals but also higher temperatures and more visitors. If you come in peak season, aim to explore early in the morning or head inland to cooler mountain air.
Winter is quieter and more atmospheric, especially in the old town and villages. While some outdoor activities pause, hiking in the lower hills or visiting local olive presses offers a different kind of charm.
How to Get There
Rethymno doesn’t have its own airport, but it’s easily reached from both Chania and Heraklion.
- From Chania Airport: It’s about a 1 hour 15-minute drive along the north coast highway.
- From Heraklion Airport: Slightly longer, around 1 hour 30 minutes by car or bus.
Regular buses run between the two cities and Rethymno. Renting a car is highly recommended if you want to explore beaches, mountain villages, and gorges at your own pace.
Rethymno is a place where history and wilderness coexist beautifully — where you can sip coffee in a Venetian courtyard, then be waist-deep in a canyon stream an hour later. For curious travellers who want both character and adventure, it’s a place worth staying a little longer.
