Cinque Terre, nestled along the rugged Ligurian coastline of northwestern Italy, offers a canyoning experience unlike any other in the Mediterranean. Here, ancient terraced hillsides descend towards the turquoise Ligurian Sea, while hidden gorges and crystalline streams carve their way through lush valleys between iconic villages such as Monterosso, Vernazza, and Riomaggiore. The interplay of sunlight on mossy rocks, the scent of wild herbs, and the distant echo of church bells create an atmosphere that is both invigorating and deeply rooted in local tradition. Canyoning in Cinque Terre is not just about adventure; it is an invitation to explore a landscape where nature and culture intertwine, offering moments of exhilaration and serenity in equal measure.

Embarking on a canyoning adventure in Cinque Terre means immersing yourself in a world of contrasts. Typical routes wind through narrow ravines and shaded forests, where the cool touch of mountain water contrasts with the warmth of the Mediterranean sun. Participants navigate natural slides, leap into clear pools, and abseil down waterfalls framed by limestone cliffs. The terrain varies from smooth, water-worn rock to pebbled riverbeds, with each section revealing new textures and colours—emerald ferns, silver-grey stone, and the occasional flash of wildflowers. Routes range from gentle descents suitable for those new to canyoning, to more technical passages that challenge experienced adventurers. Throughout, the rhythm alternates between moments of quiet reflection, as you listen to the gentle trickle of water, and bursts of adrenaline as you tackle a new drop or scramble.

I've been snorkeling many times before, but never in Italy or Cinque Terre, so I didn't know what to expect. The trip was fine, just not really worth the 74 euro we paid for two people. We went out, they tied to a buoy less than 5 minutes from the port and several SCUBA divers started a dive, then the very friendly guide told us to jump in and swim along the rocks. The rocks had lots of fish, but other than that there wasn't much else to see. We also didn't know how long we would be out for so I kept checking to see if the guide was trying to call us back to the boat (he stayed on the boat, which was fine). We kind of got bored and were relieved when he called us back. Then we weren't sure if we were going to a second location or not. We went back to shore so the divers could get fresh air tanks (I think?) and we got off. The guide asked if we had a good time, and told us to have a good day. We got the hint and left. It was fine, just keep your expectations in check.

Pour notre deuxième plongée, nous avons été enchanté par la sympathie et l'écoute des moniteurs. Seul bémol, pas de départ en pleine mer.
