To understand why coasteering in Portofino stands out among outdoor adventures, one must first picture the Ligurian coastline’s dramatic meeting of land and sea. Portofino, a jewel of the Italian Riviera, is famed for its pastel-coloured harbour, lush Mediterranean vegetation, and the crystalline waters of the Golfo del Tigullio. The protected Portofino Regional Park and Marine Reserve envelop the peninsula, offering a rare blend of rugged cliffs, hidden coves, and thriving marine life. Here, the interplay of sunlight on limestone, the scent of pine and salt, and the rhythmic sound of waves against rock create an atmosphere that is both invigorating and serene. Coasteering in this setting is not just a sport, but a way to immerse oneself in the region’s natural beauty and vibrant outdoor culture.

Practising coasteering along Portofino’s coastline is a dynamic, sensory-rich experience. Guided routes typically begin near the fishing village of Camogli or the bay of Paraggi, tracing the wild, rocky shoreline towards the promontory’s tip. Participants traverse intertidal zones, scramble over sun-warmed rocks, swim through turquoise channels, and leap from ledges into the cool embrace of the Ligurian Sea. The terrain alternates between smooth, wave-carved platforms and jagged outcrops, with occasional sea caves and pebble beaches offering moments of calm. Sessions usually last two to three hours, balancing bursts of adrenaline with quieter pauses to observe darting fish or the play of light beneath overhanging cliffs. The contrasts between the sheltered, emerald inlets and the open, wind-brushed headlands make each outing unique.

Local guides in Portofino are seasoned professionals, deeply familiar with the tides, currents, and microclimates of the area. They provide all necessary equipment, including wetsuits, helmets, buoyancy aids, and sturdy footwear, ensuring both comfort and safety on the varied terrain. Safety is paramount, with guides adapting routes to the group’s ability and prevailing conditions, and maintaining close supervision throughout. The logistics are straightforward, with meeting points accessible from Santa Margherita Ligure and Rapallo, and all gear sanitised and maintained to high standards. The region’s outdoor culture is welcoming, with a tradition of sharing knowledge and fostering a sense of adventure among visitors.

Giacomo took us on a boat tour fro Recco to Sanst Margherita. We made a stop in San Fruttuoso to snorkle, tourist the village and have cocktails and a snack at the beach. Then we went south to Santa Margherita and Portofino where we went into town for lunch and walked to Chiesa di San Georgio with amazing views of the port. We took the boat to Spiaggia dell Olivetta for more snorkling. 8 hrs of bliss.

Our guide was very nice and good. Kayaking was nice and he explained everything very well. Kayaking is quite intensive, snorkeling was "ok" where only masks where provided and no fins or breathing "tubes"

The activity was great, we wanted to do the kayaking tour but the weather didn't permit it so they suggested we did surfing instead. It was a great idea and went really well.

Da wir das erste Mal mit dem Kajak unterwegs waren, war es sehr anstrengend. Trotzdem hat es sehr viel Spass gemacht und wir würden es jederzeit wieder buchen.
