To understand why stand up paddling in Pico is so captivating, you only need to look at the island’s dramatic volcanic silhouette rising from the Atlantic. Pico, the second largest island in the Azores archipelago, is crowned by the majestic Mount Pico and fringed by a rugged coastline that alternates between black lava rocks and tranquil bays. The interplay of deep blue ocean, lush green slopes, and the ever-present mountain creates a setting that feels both wild and welcoming. Here, the Atlantic’s moods shift with the light, offering glassy mornings and shimmering sunsets, while the scent of salt and wildflowers drifts on the breeze. Stand up paddleboarding in Pico is not just about the sport—it’s an immersion in a landscape shaped by fire, water, and time, where nature’s grandeur is always close at hand.

Gliding across Pico’s coastal waters on a paddleboard, you experience the island from a unique perspective. Typical routes might take you along the sheltered coves near Madalena, with views of neighbouring Faial Island, or past the dramatic lava formations at Lajes do Pico. The water here is clear and cool, revealing volcanic rock beneath and, at times, the shadowy forms of fish or even dolphins. Sessions usually last between one and two hours, allowing time to explore hidden inlets or simply float and absorb the silence, broken only by the gentle splash of your paddle. The terrain varies from calm, protected bays ideal for learning, to open stretches where Atlantic swells offer a more dynamic challenge. Whether you seek quiet contemplation or a more invigorating adventure, Pico’s coastline delivers a blend of serenity and excitement, with the ever-present backdrop of the island’s volcanic peak.

We hiked to the top of Mount Pico with Tripix and our guide Bruno. We were very grateful for Bruno’s guidance as it made the strenuous hike easy because Bruno recommended paths up the mountain that allowed us to expend less energy.
