To glide above Tahiti is to witness the island’s legendary beauty from a perspective few ever experience. Paragliding here is not just a sport, but an immersion in the heart of French Polynesia’s wild landscapes, where emerald peaks rise sharply from turquoise lagoons and the Pacific’s endless blue stretches to the horizon. The island’s unique geography, with its volcanic mountains, lush valleys, and dramatic coastline, creates an ideal playground for free flight. From the moment you take off, the warm, fragrant air carries the scent of tropical flowers, while the sunlight dances on the water below. Whether you are drawn by the promise of panoramic views over Papeete, the capital, or the allure of soaring above the iconic silhouette of Mount Orohena, Tahiti offers a paragliding experience that is both exhilarating and deeply connected to its natural surroundings.

The sensation of paragliding in Tahiti is defined by contrasts: the quiet anticipation before launch, the sudden rush as your feet leave the earth, and the serene silence that follows as you float above the island’s vibrant tapestry. Typical flights often begin from the verdant slopes near Punaauia or the highlands above Faa’a, where the terrain drops away to reveal sweeping views of the coastline, coral reefs, and neighbouring Moorea across the channel. Flights usually last between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on weather and chosen route, with thermals and gentle trade winds providing smooth, sustained lift. The experience is accessible yet thrilling, with moments of gentle gliding punctuated by the occasional spiral or turn, all set against the backdrop of Tahiti’s ever-changing light—morning gold, midday brilliance, or the soft hues of sunset. The interplay of sea breeze, mountain air, and the distant sound of waves creates a sensory journey that is both peaceful and invigorating.

Local guides in Tahiti are passionate ambassadors of their island’s outdoor culture, combining deep knowledge of the terrain with a commitment to safety and professionalism. All instructors are certified and experienced, providing comprehensive briefings and high-quality equipment, including harnesses, helmets, and modern paragliders suited to local conditions. Safety is paramount, with strict adherence to international standards and careful monitoring of weather patterns to ensure optimal flying conditions. The logistics are seamless, with transport to take-off points and clear communication throughout. The spirit of Polynesian hospitality is ever-present, as guides share insights into the island’s geography, climate, and traditions, making each flight not just an adventure but a cultural encounter.

Tahiti’s climate allows for paragliding year-round, though the dry season from May to October offers the most stable conditions and clearest skies. The activity is open to beginners, with tandem flights requiring no prior experience, yet a reasonable level of physical fitness is necessary for take-off and landing on uneven terrain. More experienced pilots can take advantage of advanced routes and longer flights, exploring the island’s varied landscapes from above. Paragliding in Tahiti appeals to solo travellers, couples, and families with adventurous teens, as well as anyone seeking a unique perspective on the island’s natural wonders.

There are few experiences as memorable as soaring above Tahiti’s mountains and lagoons, guided by local professionals who share both their expertise and their love for the island. We were so lucky the day we went out to have the opportunity to swim with a very curious junior humpback whale! He stayed with us for about 20-25 minutes and it was incredible. We were also the only boat with the whale at the time. I think it's important to emphasize (1) being comfortable snorkeling fast for quite a distance in open ocean is key to getting to the whales to enjoy your time with them; and (2) the type of contact we had this day is not the norm but, perhaps, the exception. We had an opportunity on two other occasions (with two other outfitters) to swim with whales and both times we ended up in the water but didn't get close to the whales, and we had friends who did a whale swim with yet another outfitter and didn't end up in the water although they saw whales from the boat. Any opportunity to see whales swimming in the open water is a unique opportunity and well worth it.

Well balanced adventure and fun. Definitely took us to the places we would never be able to go by ourselves. The hike, the big surf, the cave, all amazing experiences.
