The region’s crisp winter air, the soft blue light of short northern days, and the silence broken only by the distant call of a jay or the gentle whisper of falling snow create an atmosphere that is both invigorating and deeply peaceful. Setting out on snowshoes in Åre is an experience that blends gentle exploration with moments of exhilaration. Typical routes wind through ancient spruce forests, across frozen marshes, and up gentle ridges that reveal sweeping views of the Jämtland mountains and the valley below. The terrain varies from soft, powdery drifts to compacted trails, offering both challenge and ease depending on your chosen path. Outings can last from a couple of hours to a full day, with some excursions timed to catch the golden glow of sunrise or the ethereal shimmer of the northern lights. The sensation of moving quietly through deep snow, feeling the subtle resistance underfoot, and breathing in the sharp, clean air is both grounding and energising. While some routes invite contemplative silence, others encourage lively conversation and shared discovery, especially when spotting animal tracks or pausing for a traditional Swedish fika in the wild.

Amazing experience! Dogs were very friendly and well cared for. We were taken on the sled through woods and over a frozen lake. We were asked if we wanted to go further than the agreed 16km and offered coffee to warm ourselves up afterwards
