To experience dog sledding in Avoriaz, Portes du Soleil is to immerse yourself in the heart of the French Alps, where winter’s silence is broken only by the rhythmic patter of paws on snow and the crisp mountain air carries the scent of pine. Nestled at 1,800 metres above sea level, Avoriaz is a car-free, purpose-built resort perched on a natural plateau, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Chablais Massif. The vast Portes du Soleil ski area, stretching between France and Switzerland, provides a unique backdrop of snow-laden forests, open alpine meadows, and panoramic views over the Dents du Midi and Mont Blanc. Here, dog sledding is not just an activity but a journey into the region’s wild, unspoilt landscapes, where the interplay of light and shadow on the snow creates a constantly shifting canvas.

Setting off from Avoriaz, the dog sledding experience unfolds along winding trails that weave through spruce forests and across open plateaus. Typical routes range from gentle introductory circuits to longer excursions that venture deeper into the alpine wilderness, often lasting between 30 minutes and two hours. The sensation of gliding behind a team of energetic huskies is both exhilarating and meditative: the only sounds are the runners slicing through powder, the dogs’ eager breaths, and the occasional call of your musher. The terrain varies from soft, rolling hills to more challenging inclines, offering moments of quiet contemplation as well as bursts of speed. The contrasts are striking—one moment you are enveloped in the hush of a snow-covered glade, the next you are racing across a sunlit clearing with the cold air tingling on your cheeks.

Booked this for our family of four as a surprise for my husbands 50th birthday. Well organised. Was nice to meet the dogs at the start, and to be hands on getting the harnesses on the dogs. There had been quite a bit of snowfall, so the dogs found it quite tough getting through the deeper snow. I spent half the time off my sled pushing through the snow, so you do need to be physically fit. It was a super experience and I'd fully recommend it.

What an experience. We all absolutely loved it. The dogs were so adorable and they were fantastic. We got there at 9.45 and it finished at 12.45 so took around 3 hours.

We were looking for non-ski/snowboard activities to incorporate into a two-family vacation to Chamonix. This is one of the activities we did and we all unanimously agreed it was the best adventure EVER!
