Dramatic cliffs, wide surf beaches, and winding rural trails, Aljezur and the Costa Vicentina reveal the Algarve’s wilder, quieter side. Stretching along Portugal’s southwest coast, this protected natural park is a dreamscape for surfers, hikers, and anyone chasing fresh air and open horizons.

Aljezur is a whitewashed village set in a green valley, watched over by a medieval castle and framed by the forested hills of the Vicentine Coast Natural Park. Just minutes away, the coastline unfolds into broad Atlantic beaches like Arrifana, Amoreira, Monte Clérigo, and Bordeira, less crowded, more untamed, and perfect for outdoor exploration.

This area attracts slow travellers, surf seekers, nature lovers, and families looking to disconnect. With eco-retreats, surf camps, and local guesthouses dotted across the hills and dunes, it’s a place to stay a while and live simply.

Outdoor Activities in Aljezur & the Costa Vicentina

Surfing Wild Beaches

This is one of Europe’s most raw and consistent surf zones. Whether you’re just starting out or chasing big waves, beaches like Arrifana, Amoreira, and Monte Clérigo offer swells for every level. Surf schools, board rentals, and instructors are available year-round.

Hiking the Rota Vicentina

The world-renowned Rota Vicentina hiking trail winds through this region, hugging cliffs, crossing river valleys, and linking remote villages. Spring brings wildflowers and birdlife; autumn lights up the landscape in golden tones.

Stand-Up Paddle on the River

A more tranquil way to explore the area is by paddleboard along the Aljezur River, which winds through reeds and farmland with views of the castle. Ideal for families or those seeking a slow-paced adventure.

Horseback & Jeep Tours

Discover the inland trails of the Costa Vicentina on horseback or in a 4x4. These tours take you through cork oak forests, hidden valleys, and scenic viewpoints above the sea. A great way to reach places untouched by mass tourism.

Cultural Wandering in Aljezur

Back in town, explore Aljezur’s small museums, art galleries, and its hilltop castle ruins. The local market is perfect for fresh produce, cheeses, and regional honey, great additions to a picnic on the cliffs.

Local Tips

Winds can be strong on the coast, bring layers, even in summer.

Many beaches have no lifeguard or facilities, check tides and surf forecasts before going.

Spring (April–May) and autumn (Sept–Oct) are ideal for hiking and surfing without crowds.

Car rental is highly recommended to explore beaches and trails.

Best Time to Visit

Aljezur is great from March to November, with surfable waves and hiking-friendly temperatures. Summer is the busiest, but the area rarely feels crowded. Off-season visits bring solitude, starry skies, and moody Atlantic drama.

How to Get There

Aljezur is about 1.5 hours from Faro Airport and 45 minutes from Lagos by car. Public transport is limited, so driving is the most practical option. The surrounding coast and inland trails are best reached with your own wheels.

Extend Your Adventure

Combine this escape with mountain hikes in the Serra de Monchique, or head south to Sagres for sunsets and sea kayaking. For a slower pace, drive inland to Silves or São Brás de Alportel for heritage and local life.

In Aljezur and the Costa Vicentina, the Algarve steps back and breathes deeper. It’s a place of wild waves, silent cliffs, and days shaped by wind, sun, and tide, perfect for reconnecting with nature and with yourself.

Tandem paragliding session for 2 of us. We met Nelson and Veronica on time at the meeting point at 11am and they were immediately friendly and put us at ease. They were both very enthusiastic and their excitement was evident. Nelson spent a long time explaining his experience, how the day would be structured and as much technical info as we wanted! We waited for the right conditions and had a few test flights whilst we were waiting. The location and company was great so we didn't mind waiting for an hour or so for the right conditions. When they did arrive, it was worth the wait! Beautiful, exhilarating and very safe feeling when we were flying. Would recommend to anyone - the launching and landing was easy and very controlled.
