Climb the Soufrière volcano in Guadeloupe and experience an exceptional hike through its unique rugged landscape!

Climb the Soufrière volcano in Guadeloupe and experience an exceptional hike through its unique rugged landscape!

La Soufrière volcano is still active, although it last erupted in 1977. This guided hike of about 5.5 hours will allow you to discover its most active area with several fumaroles, continuous outgassing, etc., equipped with a special mask: a unique experience in Guadeloupe, impossible to achieve on an unguided hike!

This guided hike to La Soufrière starts at the Bains Jaunes, a pool built around a spring heated by the Soufrière volcano in the heights of Saint-Claude (remember to bring your swimming costumes, the baths are a pure delight!) You will then reach the Savane des Mulets, offering a breathtaking panorama of the summit of the Soufrière volcano, as well as the Caribbean Sea and, in the distance, Les Saintes archipelago. Finally, you will begin the ascent to the crater which you will have the honour of approaching, an exclusive advantage of guided hikes at La Soufrière!

The often very capricious weather on the heights of Basse-Terre makes the volcano one of the wettest areas in the world: it is therefore essential to have a large mackintosh in your bag just in case. Vert Intense's guides will be there to accompany you throughout the ascent of the Soufrière volcano and teach you everything there is to know about the Guadeloupe National Park: its vegetation, volcanism, its impact on wildlife, etc.

So if you want to discover the Soufrière volcano during a fun hike, with the pleasure of approaching the crater, its ascent in the company of Vert Intense guides will satisfy you!

Practical information

A 5.5 hours hike on the Soufriere volcano in Guadeloupe (600 meters of ascent in total) to discover its incredible lunar landscapes with guides to teach you all there is to know about the region.

Course of events

- Welcome at the Vert Intense office, then drive with your own car to the starting point of the hike

- Distribution of masks for the crater area and start of the hike from the Bains Jaunes, a 30°C hot water pool in the heart of the rainforest

- After walking along the Bains Jaunes pool, you will continue on the paved Pas du Roy trail which goes deep into the dense rainforest: you will follow this winding track for 150 meters of ascent

- Arrival at the old Soufrière car park, the Savane à Mulets: the change of scenery is radical, with a view of the open Caribbean Sea and the Soufrière

- Depending on the weather conditions, you will take different routes: if possible, you will head east of the volcano, which will allow you to discover all the chasms from the last eruptions in 1956 and 1977. The trail is a little more direct, steeper and therefore less frequented, and you will have the pleasure of coming across mountain pineapples and their red flowers

- Arrival on the summit plateau and its many active craters: South crater, Napoleon chasm and Dupuy chasm

- If the weather permits, you will pass over the highest point of the Great Discovery at an altitude of 1,476 meters before descending via the Chemin des Dames, along the Great Fault

- Arrival at the site of the Faujas landslide for a last look at the sea before returning to the forest to reach the Bains Jaunes and finish the hike with a well-deserved swim

I was curious about the level. It is heavy for someone who doesn’t do much in sports, but you will manage.

The hike was fantastic, and it took us 3h30min only, even though we didn't rush, probably because we were only 3 people plus the guide, and the 5 hour estimate is based on groups of up to 12 people.

The volcano is very beautiful with a jagged top. The hike was exhilarating and the views into the smoking sulphorous pits of the volcano were only rivaled by the fantastic views of the whole island!
