Certified divers with previous drysuit experience are invited to explore one of Iceland’s most exceptional dive sites: the Silfra fissure in Þingvellir National Park. This extraordinary freshwater dive lets you descend between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, in a rift formed by the slow, ongoing drift of these continental giants. It is a geological marvel found nowhere else in the world.
Silfra is renowned for its visibility, often extending up to 120 metres, offering unparalleled clarity in waters filtered for decades through volcanic rock. With dramatic rock formations sculpted by time and tectonic activity, it’s no wonder Silfra is considered one of the best cold-water dive sites on the planet.
Your dive begins at the Silfra site itself, where you’ll arrive independently 15 minutes before your scheduled start time. There, you’ll meet your dive guide and small group of fellow divers. There will be no more than three participants per instructor to ensure maximum safety and individual attention. The session starts with a detailed briefing covering the dive route, safety protocols, and equipment setup. You'll be provided with top-tier gear, including BARE and Aqualung drysuits and APEX or Aqualung regulators.
Once you're fully suited up, a short walk leads to the water entry point. The guided dive lasts approximately 30 to 40 minutes and covers the four key areas of the Silfra fissure. You’ll begin in Big Crack, the narrowest section where the tectonic plates are just metres apart, perfect for that iconic "Between the Continents" shot. From there, the fissure opens into Silfra Hall, where the vibrant blues and extreme clarity reveal the full beauty of the site. As you glide deeper into Silfra Cathedral, the most impressive and dramatic part of the dive, you’ll feel like you’re flying over its 23-metre drop. Your journey finishes in the peaceful expanse of Silfra Lagoon, with still waters and incredible visibility.
After exiting the water, you’ll return your gear and make your way along a 250-meter path back to the base. There, your dive concludes with hot chocolate and cookies, a warm reward after your time in the cold waters. Once your dive is complete and you’ve warmed up, you’ll return to your vehicle and continue your Icelandic adventure.
To join this dive, participants must present a valid drysuit certification or documented proof of at least 10 logged drysuit dives completed within the past two years, verified by an instructor.
If you are a certified diver, don't miss the chance to dive into the Silfra Fault for a unique experience! And if you are not a certified diver, or if you have never dived in a drysuit before, don't hesitate to opt for snorkelling in the Silfra fault, an activity that is just as extraordinary!
