Mýrdalsjökull Glacier is Iceland's fourth-largest glacier, located in the south of the country. It sits atop Katla, an active volcano. On this glacier hike and quad biking on Mýrdalsjökull, you'll also explore Sólheimajökull Glacier, a branch of the larger glacier.
For this combination excursion, you'll start with the glacier hike on Sólheimajökull Glacier. Upon arrival at the meeting point, you'll be greeted by the experienced guide and receive a safety briefing and instructions on how to use the glacier equipment. No prior glacier hiking experience is needed for this tour. Once you are set up, the hiking on Sólheimajökull Glacier begins!
Following the guide, you'll explore the diverse landscapes of this unique glacier, including deep crevasses, ice formations and tunnels. The glacier also features ash-streaked ice resulting from previous volcano eruptions. Throughout the glacier hike on Sólheimajökull, the guide will share insights about this fascinating natural phenomenon. Then, you'll return to the starting point and prepare for the quad biking tour on Mýrdalsjökull Glacier!
You'll make your own way to the base camp's starting point for the quad biking tour. There, you'll meet the certified ATV guide and receive the quad biking equipment (overalls, helmet and balaclava). Each vehicle can be shared between two participants, with one driver and one passenger, or you can ride the quad as a solo driver. After a quick safety briefing and driving instructions, you'll set off on your quad biking tour on Mýrdalsjökull!
Over a 2-hour ATV tour, you'll drive to Sólheimasandur, a striking black sand beach located near Sólheimajökull Glacier and the village of Vík. The area is shaped by glacial outwash, with sediment deposited by meltwater rivers. During the quad biking on Sólheimasandur, you'll visit the famous DC-3 plane wreck, the wreckage of a U.S. Navy plane that crash-landed on the beach in 1973. The guide will share some facts about the history of this wreck. After admiring the breathtaking glacier scenery, you'll return to the starting point.
Experience the awe-inspiring glacier landscapes in Iceland on this thrilling combination tour of quad biking and glacier hiking on Sólheimajökull and Mýrdalsjökull Glacier!
