About the activity
Chase the Northern Lights on a guided evening safari from Bodø and discover the magic of the Arctic night. Travelling in a comfortable minibus with a local guide, you'll follow the latest aurora and weather forecasts to reach the viewing locations offering the best possible conditions. With small groups, warm blankets and hot drinks included, this Northern Lights safari combines adventure, nature and a truly memorable Arctic experience.
Located at 67°N, Bodø sits within the auroral oval, making it an excellent base for Northern Lights excursions. From September to March, the longer hours of darkness create the conditions needed to search for the Aurora Borealis. Rather than staying in one fixed location, your guide selects the best area for the evening based on cloud cover, weather and aurora activity. The potential viewing areas stretch from north of Bodø to further south, allowing the route to adapt to the conditions on the night of your safari.
Your Northern Lights adventure begins at the meeting point, where you'll meet your guide and receive an introduction to the evening ahead. Once everyone is ready, you'll leave the city behind in a comfortable minibus and head towards darker areas with better opportunities for Aurora viewing.
Before each departure, your guides check the latest weather and aurora forecasts, including cloud cover and geomagnetic activity. This allows them to decide where to go rather than simply following a fixed itinerary. Over approximately three to four hours, you'll visit the locations offering the best conditions for viewing the Aurora Borealis. Away from Bodø's light pollution, the darkness can also reveal stars and the Milky Way on clear nights. While the Northern Lights can never be guaranteed, your guide will use their knowledge of the local area and the latest forecasts to give you the best possible opportunity.
Along the way, the winter landscape becomes part of the adventure, with frozen lakes and snow-covered forests around you and, when conditions allow, views towards the Vestfjord and surrounding snowy peaks. As Northern Lights chasing can involve waiting patiently for the Aurora to appear, warm wool blankets and hot drinks are included, allowing you to stay cosy while you watch the sky. Don't forget to bring a camera with manual settings for long exposures, or use Night Mode on a smartphone; your guide will help you!
This Northern Lights safari is a great choice if you want more than simply standing in one place and hoping the Aurora appears. With an experienced local guide monitoring the forecasts and adapting the route to the conditions, you'll explore different dark-sky locations around Bodø while discovering the Arctic landscape after nightfall.
