Nestled in the heart of Corsica, Corte is a destination where horseback riding becomes an immersive journey through some of the island’s most evocative landscapes. Surrounded by the soaring peaks of the Monte Rotondo massif and threaded by the clear waters of the Restonica and Tavignano rivers, Corte offers riders a rare blend of wild beauty and cultural depth. The town itself, once the capital of Corsican independence, sits atop a rocky promontory, its citadel overlooking a patchwork of chestnut forests, granite ridges, and sunlit meadows. Here, the air carries the scent of wild thyme and cistus, and the light shifts from golden dawns to the cool blue of mountain evenings. For those seeking a genuine connection with nature and Corsican heritage, horseback riding in Corte is both an adventure and a passage through time.

Riding in this region is a dynamic experience shaped by the diversity of the terrain. Typical excursions might lead you along ancient shepherds’ trails, winding through oak and pine woods, or across open plateaus where the wind stirs the tall grasses. Routes often follow the contours of the Restonica Valley, with its crystalline streams and dramatic rock formations, or ascend towards panoramic viewpoints above the Tavignano Gorge. Depending on the chosen itinerary, rides can last from a gentle hour to a full day, each moment revealing new contrasts: the hush of shaded woodland, the rhythmic sound of hooves on stony paths, and the exhilaration of cresting a ridge to sweeping views of the Corsican interior. The terrain is varied but accessible, offering both tranquil stretches for contemplation and more technical passages that invite focus and skill.

Local guides in Corte are passionate custodians of their land, combining deep knowledge of the region’s ecology and history with a commitment to safety and quality. Instruction is clear and supportive, whether you are a first-time rider or an experienced equestrian. Horseback riding in Corte is accessible to beginners, though a reasonable level of physical fitness is recommended to fully enjoy the experience, especially on longer or more challenging routes. The best seasons for riding are spring and autumn, when the Corsican climate is mild, the light is soft, and the landscape is alive with colour and fragrance. Summer rides are possible, often scheduled in the cooler hours of morning or evening. Families, couples, solo travellers, and groups of friends will all find options tailored to their interests and abilities, from introductory treks to more demanding adventures for seasoned riders.

We went Canyoning at Pont Verghellu with Antoine. The hike up is a bit challenging, and especially in a bathing suit (no shorts possible, only bathing suit allowed on hike up). Descent is in wetsuit and helmet. The descent is challenging as the boulders are slippery and difficult to see under the water. However, it was really amazing. Lots of high jumps, toboggan (slide down rocks) and a zip line possibility at the end. I am definitely sore today. Would not recommend for anyone with any joint issues as the ankles/knees and hips will get extra work strain. Renting shoes from them is ESSENTIAL, as we went in sneakers and they were too slippery, no ankle support. Beautiful day!

Nature, adrenaline, once in a lifetime. Take good time driving up and eat lunch in the beautiful villages on the way. Canyoning is so much fun and the whole family loved it.
