This region, nestled between the dramatic slopes of the Cirque de Salazie and the coastal town of Saint-Benoit, offers a unique setting for aquatic adventure. The Marsouins River carves its way through deep basalt gorges, surrounded by dense tropical vegetation, the air filled with the scent of wet earth and the distant sound of waterfalls. Here, the interplay of sunlight and shadow on mossy rocks creates a vibrant mosaic, inviting both seasoned explorers and newcomers to discover the island’s untamed spirit through canyoning.

Canyoning along the Marsouins River is a dynamic journey through a landscape shaped by water and time. Typical routes wind through narrow ravines, where participants navigate natural slides, leap into crystal-clear pools, and abseil down cascades veiled in mist. The terrain alternates between tranquil stretches, where the only sounds are birdsong and the gentle flow of water, and exhilarating sections that demand focus and agility. Most excursions last between three and five hours, offering a balanced mix of adrenaline and contemplation. The volcanic rock underfoot is cool and textured, while the river’s temperature provides a refreshing contrast to the tropical warmth above. Each descent reveals new perspectives: fern-lined cliffs, hidden waterfalls, and sudden bursts of sunlight filtering through the canopy.

We are a family with two teenagers and some of us have vertigo so we were a bit reluctant but it was a very fun activity for all ages. When jumps are too high you can always choose a lower option. The guide (Noelle) was very good friendly and knowledgeable. There was a good local aperitieve after a very fun morning.
