What are the activities to do in Elafonissi?

First steps into paradise - Feel the soft, pink-tinged sand between your toes, the warm shallows lapping gently at your ankles, and the salty breeze brushing past your face. Welcome to Elafonisi, a corner of Crete where the landscape takes on pastel tones and time slows down.

Elafonisi, on the remote south-west coast of Crete, 75km from Chania is a place of rare, unspoilt beauty. Known for its unique pink sand—coloured by crushed shells and coral—and shallow turquoise lagoons, this protected area feels both wild and serene. Unlike many Mediterranean beach spots, Elafonisi retains an almost untouched charm. It's not just a beach, but a sensory escape for travellers drawn to quiet nature and outdoor adventure.

Elafonisi is within close proximity to Palaiochora village, where you can catch daily boats to Elafonisi from the eastern harbour of Palaiochora. The beach is 200 metres from the island and you can walk on the coastline and pass the shallow lagoon with the green blue water around you.

Sea Kayaking tour at the Pink Lagoon from Elafonisi

A handful of local providers offer kayaks for rent. Paddling between sandbanks and rocky outcrops gives you access to quieter coves, ideal for a mid-day escape from the crowds. If the sea is calm, you can even reach nearby islets for a private swim.

Kayaking, swimming, and snorkelling with Manu and Fiona from Fit in Crete was the highlight of our trip! They are really genuine, lovely, and comfortable people - we enjoyed talking to them on the way to the beach, learning about their way of life (made us want to move to Greece and kayak hahaha)! They are very thoughtful and prepared neoprene tops for us and also lent us thin long-sleeved tops. They are experienced and looked out for me when I felt cold in the water and Fiona was really nice to come with me to shore to warm up. Most importantly, Manu and Fiona were very patient and did not rush us and that was key to a lovely and relaxing day. The waters were so beautiful (clearest waters we have ever seen!) and we had a great time. We can’t recommend this activity enough. Thanks Manu and Fiona 🙂
