The city, perched above the Gave de Pau river, is a meeting point between mountain energy and the gentle rhythms of southwestern France. Here, the air carries a fresh, mineral scent from the river, and the light shifts from golden mornings to cool, misty afternoons. The landscape is a mosaic of lush riverbanks, stony beaches, and distant snow-capped peaks. Whether you are drawn by the promise of adventure or the tranquillity of nature, Pau’s waterways invite you to experience the region’s vibrant outdoor spirit and its deep connection to the river.

Kayaking and canoeing in Pau are shaped by the Gave de Pau’s ever-changing character. The river flows from the heart of the Pyrenees, winding past the city and through the Béarn countryside. Paddlers can choose between calm sections ideal for gentle exploration and more dynamic stretches where rapids test skill and nerve. Typical outings last from one to three hours, allowing time to absorb the shifting textures of water, the play of sunlight on the surface, and the calls of birds along the banks. Some routes pass beneath the historic Pont d’Espagne or skirt the edges of the Parc National des Pyrénées, offering moments of quiet reflection as well as bursts of adrenaline. The contrasts between peaceful glides and lively whitewater make every descent memorable.

Unfortunately I don't speak French and my pilot didn't speak much English, but it wasn't that necessary! The flight lasted about 30 minutes and we flew at around 2500ft and 120kph. Its quite breath taking being in such a small contraption at such height! You can see a long way and have unobstructed views with the glass window and doors.
