Caving in Pau offers a rare opportunity to journey into the heart of southwestern France’s limestone landscapes, where time and water have sculpted vast networks of caverns, galleries, and underground rivers. The region’s proximity to the Ossau Valley and the Béarn mountains infuses every descent with a sense of adventure, as shafts of filtered light reveal ancient rock formations and the cool air carries the earthy scent of mineral-rich stone. Here, the spirit of the Pyrenean outdoors is ever-present, blending natural wonder with a deep-rooted tradition of exploration.

Descending into the caves around Pau, each step brings new sensations. The terrain varies from spacious chambers adorned with stalactites to narrow passages that demand careful navigation, their walls textured by centuries of flowing water. Typical caving excursions might lead you through the Grotte de la Verna or the Gouffre d’Esparros, where underground streams echo in the darkness and the temperature remains refreshingly constant, even as the world above shifts with the seasons. The experience is a dynamic interplay between moments of quiet awe—when the only sound is your breath and the distant drip of water—and bursts of exhilaration as you climb, crawl, or abseil deeper into the earth. Each route offers its own highlights, from shimmering calcite curtains to fossilised shells embedded in the rock, revealing the region’s ancient geological story.

Unfortunately I don't speak French and my pilot didn't speak much English, but it wasn't that necessary! The flight lasted about 30 minutes and we flew at around 2500ft and 120kph. Its quite breath taking being in such a small contraption at such height! You can see a long way and have unobstructed views with the glass window and doors.
