Bora Bora, nestled in the heart of French Polynesia’s Society Islands, is a destination that seems purpose-built for microlight flying. The island’s iconic silhouette, dominated by the ancient volcanic peak of Mount Otemanu, rises dramatically above a lagoon of shifting blues and greens. From the air, the interplay of sunlight on the water reveals coral gardens and sandbanks, while the gentle curve of Matira Beach and the scattered motus—small islets—create a living mosaic below. Microlight aviation here is not just about altitude, but about perspective: it offers a rare chance to witness the vibrant textures and colours of Bora Bora’s reefs, rainforests, and coastline in a single, sweeping panorama. The warm, fragrant air carries the scent of frangipani and salt, and the island’s relaxed rhythm infuses every moment with a sense of wonder and discovery.

Taking off from the edge of the lagoon, microlight flights in Bora Bora typically trace routes along the coast, circling over the crystalline waters and passing close to landmarks such as Mount Pahia and the secluded Motu Tapu. Flights often last between 20 and 60 minutes, allowing time to absorb the shifting patterns of light on the Pacific and the intricate shapes of the barrier reef. The sensation is a blend of quiet serenity and exhilarating freedom: the hum of the engine is gentle, the wind cool against your skin, and the landscape unfolds in all directions. The terrain below shifts from lush forest to volcanic rock, from white sand beaches to the deep blue of the open ocean. Whether you are soaring above the lagoon’s turquoise expanse or gliding along the rugged coastline, every moment in the air reveals new contrasts and details, from the play of sunlight on the water to the distant outline of neighbouring islands like Taha’a and Raiatea.
