Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is a destination where the Aegean’s turquoise expanse meets a vibrant outdoor culture shaped by centuries of maritime tradition. Kitesurfing in Rhodes is more than a sport; it is an immersion into a landscape where ancient ruins overlook golden beaches, and the scent of wild thyme drifts on the ever-present Meltemi wind. The island’s west coast, particularly around Prasonisi and Theologos, has become a magnet for kitesurfers seeking reliable winds, sunlit skies, and a welcoming atmosphere. Here, the interplay of rugged hills, crystalline waters, and the rhythmic sound of waves creates an environment that is both energising and deeply restorative, making Rhodes a premier destination for kitesurfing enthusiasts from around the world.

Practising kitesurfing on Rhodes is an experience defined by contrasts and sensations. On the southern tip at Prasonisi, two seas converge, offering a unique playground where flat, shallow lagoons meet rolling swells. The wind, steady and warm from May to October, fills your kite and lifts you across the water’s surface, the salt spray cool against sun-warmed skin. Sessions typically last two to three hours, with routes ranging from gentle, sheltered bays for beginners to open sea runs for advanced riders. The light shifts throughout the day, painting the water in shades of blue and gold, while the distant hum of cicadas mingles with the rush of the wind. Whether carving through glassy morning waters or launching into afternoon chop, kitesurfing here balances adrenaline with moments of quiet, surrounded by the wild beauty of Rhodes’ coastline.

Local guides and instructors in Rhodes are passionate professionals, deeply connected to the island’s outdoor life. Rhodes’ kitesurfing season peaks from late spring to early autumn, when the Meltemi wind is most consistent and the sea temperature is inviting. The island caters to a wide range of participants: complete beginners can learn in shallow, protected bays with gentle breezes, while experienced riders can challenge themselves in stronger winds and open water. While no prior experience is necessary for introductory lessons, a reasonable level of fitness and confidence in the water are important. We tend to do this kind of activity in most countries we visit that offer it, but can honestly say this is one of the best we have done.

We really enjoyed this tour. The pace was excellent and we saw the historic old city as well as a beautiful mountain top view over Rhodes.

From start to finish the kayaking experience was so much fun. The boats were safe and easier to use, plenty of instructions provided before so I didn’t feel unsafe at any moment. The secluded beaches are gorgeous and we had plenty of time to swim and relax at each one. Lots of history and geography provided about certain places and formations. Wild goats would come down on the beach and if you’re careful and patient you may be able to feed them (they’re herbivores so only veg and fruit). Thank you to the instructor and team for an incredible experience.
