Set in the heart of the Azores archipelago, São Miguel invites adventurers to discover its wild beauty from the water. Kayaking and canoeing here reveal a landscape shaped by volcanic forces, where emerald lakes nestle in ancient calderas and the Atlantic’s deep blue stretches to the horizon. The island’s lush hillsides, thermal springs, and dramatic cliffs create an atmosphere that feels both remote and welcoming, with the scent of hydrangeas and the sound of seabirds never far away. Whether gliding across the mirror-like surface of Lagoa das Sete Cidades or tracing the rugged coastline near Ponta Delgada, paddling in São Miguel offers a unique perspective on this vibrant, living island.

Exploring São Miguel by kayak or canoe is an experience defined by contrasts and discovery. On the tranquil waters of Lagoa do Fogo, the morning mist rises to reveal steep, forested slopes reflected in the lake’s clear depths, while the volcanic sand beneath your craft adds a subtle warmth to the air. Coastal routes, such as those near Vila Franca do Campo or along the north shore, bring a different energy: the rhythm of the ocean, the salt spray, and the play of sunlight on basalt cliffs. Routes vary in length and challenge, from gentle one-hour paddles suitable for families to longer excursions that test endurance and skill. The sensation of moving silently through these waters, accompanied by the calls of gulls and the distant hum of village life, is both grounding and exhilarating.

Local guides on São Miguel are passionate about sharing the island’s natural wonders, combining deep knowledge of the terrain with a commitment to safety and enjoyment. All excursions are led by certified professionals who provide high-quality equipment, including stable kayaks or canoes, paddles, life jackets, and, where needed, wetsuits. Safety briefings and technique instruction are standard, ensuring that participants of all levels feel confident on the water. The Azorean outdoor culture values respect for nature and community, and guides are attentive to changing weather and sea conditions, adapting routes as needed for comfort and security. Logistics are straightforward, with meeting points in accessible towns such as Ponta Delgada and Furnas, and transport to the water’s edge often included.

Kayaking and canoeing in São Miguel are accessible to beginners, yet require a reasonable level of physical fitness, especially for longer or coastal routes where wind and currents can add challenge. The best time to paddle is from late spring to early autumn, when the weather is mild, the water is inviting, and the island’s colours are at their most vivid. Activities are suitable for solo travellers, families with older children, and groups seeking a shared adventure. Instructors tailor each outing to the group’s ability, making it easy for newcomers to learn while offering more demanding options for experienced paddlers.

For those seeking to experience São Miguel’s wild spirit and ever-changing light from a fresh vantage point, kayaking and canoeing offer an unforgettable journey. Book your adventure with Manawa and let local professionals guide you through the island’s hidden waterways and open seas, where every paddle stroke brings you closer to the heart of the Azores.

I just had the best time learning how to surf! A couple of friends and I took a lesson, and it was seriously so much fun. The instructors were awesome—super patient and encouraging, even when we were totally wiping out. They made sure we had the basics down on the sand before we even got into the water, which was a huge help. The feeling of finally catching a wave and standing up for the first time was incredible. We were all cheering for each other, and the energy was just great. It was challenging, but in the best possible way. We're all completely hooked now and are already planning on doing a full surf camp! Big thanks to the whole team for an unforgettable experience. If you're looking for a fun new hobby and an amazing day out, this is it!
The equipment and boat ride to our location of interest was smooth and easy. We spent just over an hour in the water around the island exploring underwater. The guide was quick to point out eels or starfish, and the name of all the fish that we saw (too many to remember).
Amazing tour, the guide is well adapting the pace to everyone in the group, giving a helping hand if needed and accompanying the tour with some stories about the history of the island!

Something really different and at the same time interesting (you learn how the use the waves) and in a beautiful environmnent. The kids loved it!
Mijn zoon van 12 en ikzelf vonden het een hele leuke activiteit. Wij deden de tocht van ongeveer 2u30 min en hebben verschillende soorten activiteiten gedaan: zipline, sprongen, met touwen naar beneden...
