The island’s volcanic cliffs, lush green hills, and dramatic coastline create a striking backdrop for encounters with some of the ocean’s most majestic creatures. Here, the deep blue waters off Ponta Delgada and Vila Franca do Campo are alive with movement, offering a rare opportunity to witness sperm whales, blue whales, and playful pods of dolphins in their natural environment. The gentle Atlantic breeze carries the scent of salt and wildflowers, while the ever-changing light plays across the waves, setting the stage for an unforgettable marine adventure.

Embarking on a whale watching tour in São Miguel is an immersive journey into the heart of the Azores’ marine ecosystem. Most excursions depart from the island’s southern harbours, where modern, comfortable boats glide past basalt cliffs and into open waters. The experience is a blend of anticipation and serenity: the quiet hum of the engine, the rhythmic sway of the boat, and the sudden thrill as a whale’s tail breaks the surface. Guides share their knowledge of cetacean behaviour and local ecology, helping guests spot not only whales but also dolphins, turtles, and seabirds. The contrast between moments of calm observation and bursts of excitement as animals appear creates a dynamic, memorable outing, lasting two to three hours and suitable for a range of interests.

Safety and professionalism are at the core of whale watching in São Miguel. Local guides are experienced marine biologists or seasoned seafarers, deeply familiar with the Azorean waters and committed to responsible wildlife observation. Participants are provided with life jackets, waterproof gear if needed, and binoculars to enhance the experience. Boats are equipped with modern navigation and safety systems, and tours operate under strict guidelines to protect both visitors and marine life. The island’s outdoor culture values respect for nature, and guides often share insights into conservation efforts and the unique relationship between the Azorean people and the sea.

Whale watching in São Miguel is accessible to beginners, families, and seasoned wildlife enthusiasts alike. The best time to visit is from April to October, when migratory whales pass through the Azores and the weather is mild. While no prior experience is required, participants should be comfortable on boats and prepared for variable sea conditions. The activity is suitable for most ages and fitness levels, though a basic level of mobility is necessary to board vessels safely. São Miguel’s welcoming atmosphere and the inclusive nature of its outdoor activities make it an ideal destination for anyone seeking a close encounter with marine life.

I just had the best time learning how to surf! A couple of friends and I took a lesson, and it was seriously so much fun. The instructors were awesome—super patient and encouraging, even when we were totally wiping out. They made sure we had the basics down on the sand before we even got into the water, which was a huge help. The feeling of finally catching a wave and standing up for the first time was incredible. We were all cheering for each other, and the energy was just great. It was challenging, but in the best possible way. We're all completely hooked now and are already planning on doing a full surf camp! Big thanks to the whole team for an unforgettable experience. If you're looking for a fun new hobby and an amazing day out, this is it!
The equipment and boat ride to our location of interest was smooth and easy. We spent just over an hour in the water around the island exploring underwater. The guide was quick to point out eels or starfish, and the name of all the fish that we saw (too many to remember).
Amazing tour, the guide is well adapting the pace to everyone in the group, giving a helping hand if needed and accompanying the tour with some stories about the history of the island!

Something really different and at the same time interesting (you learn how the use the waves) and in a beautiful environmnent. The kids loved it!
Mijn zoon van 12 en ikzelf vonden het een hele leuke activiteit. Wij deden de tocht van ongeveer 2u30 min en hebben verschillende soorten activiteiten gedaan: zipline, sprongen, met touwen naar beneden...
