Must-do activities in Kiruna

Kiruna stands out as a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a variety of activities that showcase the best of Swedish Lapland. In winter, snowmobiling is a highlight, with excursions ranging from daytime safaris through Arctic nature to night-time rides in search of the Northern Lights. Guided snowmobile tours often include traditional meals and visits to iconic sites like the ICEHOTEL, allowing you to immerse yourself in local culture and scenery.

Dog sledding is another must-try experience. Whether you choose a half-day introduction, a self-drive adventure, or a multi-day expedition with overnight stays in wilderness cabins, you will discover the unique bond between musher and husky. Some tours even combine dog sledding with traditional Swedish fika or animal welfare courses, providing a deeper understanding of this Arctic tradition.

For those drawn to the magic of the aurora, Kiruna offers a range of Northern Lights experiences. Join a minivan or minibus chase, embark on a snowshoeing or snowmobiling night tour, or combine the spectacle with a photography workshop. Adventurous visitors can also opt for an overnight stay in a self-made igloo or wilderness cabin, maximising their chances of witnessing the aurora in comfort.

Summer brings its own adventures, such as canoe tours on the Torne River, guided hikes in Abisko National Park, and moose safaris in the Kalix River Valley. Fishing excursions and quad bike tours reveal the region’s natural beauty from new perspectives, while visits to husky kennels and summer dog sledding offer insight into local life year-round.

When to visit Kiruna?

Kiruna’s outdoor activities are shaped by the dramatic changes of the Arctic seasons. Winter, from December to April, is the prime time for snowmobiling, dog sledding, snowshoeing, and Northern Lights excursions. During these months, the landscape is blanketed in snow, and the long nights provide excellent opportunities to see the aurora borealis.

Spring and early summer, from May to June, bring milder temperatures and the midnight sun, making it ideal for canoeing, hiking, and wildlife watching. Autumn, from September to November, is another excellent period for Northern Lights viewing, with crisp air and colourful foliage enhancing the experience. Each season offers its own unique charm, so the best time to visit depends on your preferred activities and the natural phenomena you wish to witness.

Great experience walking in the snow, at night! The moonlight was amazing so we had a beautiful hike. It is uphill and a bit challenging, but the guide was super nice and we could go at our own pace. The aurora was amazing, we caught it on the last ten minutes of the hike. Cool experience!
