To witness the ocean’s giants in their natural habitat, few places rival the allure of whale watching in Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria. Nestled on the sun-drenched southwest coast of Gran Canaria, this vibrant harbour town is framed by volcanic cliffs and the endless blue of the Atlantic. The region’s unique geography, with its deep offshore waters and proximity to the Canary Current, creates a haven for a remarkable diversity of cetaceans. Here, the interplay of light on the water, the gentle sway of boats, and the distant silhouette of the Tamadaba Natural Park set the stage for an unforgettable marine adventure. The atmosphere is both lively and tranquil, with the salty breeze mingling with the scents of the nearby marina and the ever-present promise of discovery just beyond the horizon.

Embarking on a whale watching excursion from Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria is an immersive journey into the heart of the Atlantic. Most tours depart from the bustling marina, quickly leaving behind the golden beaches and urban rhythm for the open sea. The typical route follows the island’s rugged southwest coastline, where the ocean floor drops steeply, attracting pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, and, at times, migrating sperm whales or even orcas. Out on the water, the sensation shifts between anticipation and awe—the quiet hum of the boat interrupted only by the sudden exhalation of a whale or the playful leap of dolphins. The contrast between the vast, sunlit expanse and the intimate moment of a whale surfacing is striking. Excursions usually last two to three hours, offering ample time to observe marine life, absorb the warmth of the subtropical sun, and appreciate the ever-changing play of colours on the sea.

Local guides in Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria are seasoned professionals, deeply familiar with the region’s marine ecosystem and committed to responsible wildlife observation. Each excursion is led by certified instructors who share their knowledge of cetacean behaviour, local currents, and conservation efforts. Modern vessels are equipped with safety gear, shaded seating, and observation decks to ensure both comfort and security. The guides prioritise the well-being of both guests and marine life, adhering to strict codes of conduct that minimise disturbance. Accessibility is a key feature, with most boats designed to accommodate families, beginners, and those with limited mobility, while still requiring a basic level of physical fitness for boarding and moving around the vessel. The local outdoor culture is rooted in respect for nature, blending hospitality with a genuine passion for the sea.

Whale watching in Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria is possible year-round, thanks to the mild Canary Islands climate and the resident populations of whales and dolphins. The calmest seas and clearest visibility are typically found from April to October, making this period ideal for first-time visitors and families. However, winter months can offer quieter experiences and the chance to spot migratory species. No prior experience is necessary, making these excursions accessible to beginners, children, and seasoned wildlife enthusiasts alike. While the activity is suitable for most ages, participants should be comfortable with gentle boat movement and able to follow safety instructions.

For those seeking a genuine connection with the wild Atlantic and its extraordinary inhabitants, whale watching in Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria offers a rare blend of excitement, serenity, and discovery. Let Manawa guide you to the heart of this marine sanctuary, where every outing is a chance to witness nature’s wonders and create lasting memories on the sunlit waters of Gran Canaria.

I really enjoyed the activity, nice way to see the coast of the island and see the less touristy spots. We saw some baby lemon sharks and a sea turtle while out on the water.
