Riding on horseback at Piton de la Fournaise is an invitation to explore one of Réunion Island’s most extraordinary natural wonders from a unique perspective. The volcano’s slopes, rising above the island’s southeast, offer a landscape shaped by fire and time—vast lava flows, mineral plains, and lush highland meadows. As you journey along ancient trails, the air is tinged with the scent of wild herbs and volcanic earth, while the play of light across the black basalt and green pastures creates a constantly shifting panorama. The distant rumble of the Indian Ocean and the silhouette of the volcano’s caldera set the scene for an adventure that is both serene and exhilarating.

The experience of horseback riding at Piton de la Fournaise is defined by its contrasts. Routes typically begin near Bourg-Murat or La Plaine des Cafres, winding through cool, misty forests before emerging onto open plateaus where the terrain becomes more rugged and volcanic. Rides can range from gentle two-hour introductions to full-day treks, each offering a blend of calm walking sections and more dynamic canters across open ground. The sensation of moving in rhythm with your horse, the crunch of hooves on cooled lava, and the shifting temperatures as you ascend or descend create a multisensory journey. Highlights include panoramic views over the Enclos Fouqué caldera, glimpses of endemic flora, and the quiet solitude of the highlands, punctuated only by birdsong and the distant call of cattle.

Local guides at Piton de la Fournaise are passionate equestrians and skilled instructors, deeply familiar with the region’s microclimates and volcanic terrain. They provide well-trained horses suited to all levels, along with helmets and essential safety equipment. Before each ride, guides offer a thorough briefing on riding techniques and trail etiquette, ensuring that both beginners and experienced riders feel confident and secure. The outdoor culture here is welcoming and inclusive, with a strong emphasis on environmental respect and the preservation of local traditions. Logistics are straightforward, with most stables located within easy reach of Saint-Pierre or Le Tampon, and transfers can often be arranged.

Horseback riding at Piton de la Fournaise is accessible to a wide range of participants, from first-time riders to seasoned equestrians. While no prior experience is required for introductory outings, a reasonable level of physical fitness is important, as the volcanic terrain can be uneven and the altitude may add a gentle challenge. The best seasons for riding are the cooler, drier months from May to November, when the air is crisp and visibility is at its best. Families, couples, solo travellers, and groups will all find options tailored to their interests and abilities, with flexible durations and routes available.

Excellent adventure, full of activity, medium intensity hiking. Arnaud is well prepared, with good knowledge of multiple domains: geology, biology, local habits, etc.
Very good choice if you're in Saint Pierre. Not requiring hiking capabilities, but with lots of interesting parts and fun. Our guide Thomas is well prepared, full of specific knowledges and ready to answer.
A wonderful time hiking and exploring. Was fun to have some spots to crawl through the tunnels.
We thoroughly enjoyed the lava tunnels and learnt a lot from this experience as it is not something we can do back home.
