Activity description

Travel through the beautiful mountains of Skibotn Valley from Tromsø on an exciting self-drive dog sledding excursion. Welcoming participants from ages 5 and up on this family-friendly adventure!

The village of Skibotn in Norway is situated on the eastern shore of the Lyngen fjord, surrounded by picturesque landscapes and mountains. Located in the north of the country and close to the Arctic Circle, the region features snowy conditions in the winter months, creating a white wonderland. Dog sledding is a traditional activity in this region and a great way to discover the natural beauty of the area!

For this tour, you have the option to meet your guide at the dog kennel in Skibotn or be picked up from Tromsø and transported to the farm. Once you arrive, the experienced dog musher will introduce you to the friendly Alaskan Huskies native to the region. You will begin with a safety briefing and driving lesson, before receiving your Arctic gear. Each sled will be shared by two, one passenger and one driver with the chance to switch during the tour. Once you are prepared, the adventure begins!

Your team of excitable dogs will pull your sled into the pine forests that surround the kennel. Travelling through the scenic outdoors, you will experience true Arctic wilderness. The dogs will travel up into the snowy mountains, providing a picturesque view of the Lyngen Alps, an extraordinary mountain range. This traditional activity will make you feel like a local as you discover nature and wildlife. Midway through, you will take a short break so the dogs can rest. This is a good opportunity to capture some photos of the breathtaking views. After switching drivers, you will then ride back to the base. Upon returning to the farm, you will say goodbye to your four-legged friends before your return transfer to Tromsø.

Everything was perfect and very well organised. There was not enough snow in Skibotn, so we drove to another spot near the finnish border and the landscape was breathtaking. We had a great time, good food in beautiful Mumin bowls, very lovely, happy and cuddly dogs and so much fun driving the sled with them for about an hour. My ten year old son was to small to ride the sled himself but really enjoyed the passenger seat in front all the time. 10/10! Thank you so much!

Queue for clothing unorganised and took far too long, T&C’s could have been distributed & collated on coach from Tromso

Nice but very low snow level

The husky sleigh ride was an absolute highlight for us, and we would do it again in a heartbeat! The dogs were very friendly and affectionate, and the scenery was beautiful. We traveled on a great route through the forest and over frozen rivers, covering 12 km in a duration of 1.5 hours with a driver switch in between. We were equipped with thermal suits, waterproof boots, and mittens, which kept us pleasantly warm, and after the ride, we were able to warm up with a fish soup (or alternatively, tomato soup). We would have loved to cuddle with the dogs a little longer, but when can you ever get enough of that?! ;)

It was a pleasure to self drive dog sledding. The dogs are very friendly and love to run, they can not wait when they start.
