Franschhoek: The Must-Do Activities

Franschhoek: What to do when you get there?

Located right on the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve, Franschhoek is South Africa’s food and wine spot, but not only is it famous for its mouthwatering delicacies, the region offers outstanding landscapes and group fun outdoor activities.

A foodie’s paradise, Franschhoek is located an hour and half drive from Cape Town. Ancient wineyards as old as the town itself are the hallmark of this Western Cape city. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, Frenchmen settled and brought with them their vines thus starting Franschhoek gastronomic tradition.

Wine is certainly motivation enough from travelers from around the world to visit South Africa, yet the privileged location has allowed adventurers to enjoy the vineyards in a different fashion. Franschhoek’s outstanding surroundings offer hiking and mountain biking trails in mountains where years ago elephants would walk through.

The town’s backdrop is the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. With 30 km of drawn trails, the reserve offers numerous trekking options. A 2 and a half hour hike will take you to the summit of the Du Toitskop Mountains, although it’s only a 7.5 km hike, you are guaranteed to feel the distance on your legs. A more challenging 15 km, 8 hour hike up the Perdekop will reward you with a 360 degrees panoramic view. There will be perfect spot for you to open that bottle of red you brought. If what you want is to take home every single detail, the Franschhoek Valley Walk is the way to go. On a three day voyage, you will discover all the secrets this unknown piece of heaven has.

Extreme activity enthusiasts are also welcome in the “French Corner”. Where there are mountains, there are those who wish to bike on them and the region has a huge offer. The local’s favorite trail will take you from Franschhoek downtown to the Theewaterskloof Dam. During this 25 km mountain bike outing, you will ride on the skirts of the Hottentots-Holland Mountains and aside the Theewaters Natural Reserve. Not far from downtown you will find the Matoppie MTB Trail. There, you will ride on terrains that require a somewhat polished technique through rocky and sandy forest roads.

Holiday makers can also enjoy mountain biking, but with a slightly different twist. On a downhill scooter, you will discover the historic 1825 Holloway Pass and the 1819 Cats Path ox wagon trail that ends at Haute Cabrière Cellar Restaurant. During this fun activity, picturesque views of the Franschhoek Valley as well as the pristine fauna and flora of the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve will be you scenery.

Come to Franschhoek for the food, stay for the wine and return for the beauty of the winelands!
