Hiking on Hvar offers an invitation to explore one of the Adriatic’s most captivating islands, where ancient landscapes meet the vivid blues of the Croatian coast. The island’s unique geography, stretching from the lively harbour town of Hvar to the tranquil villages of Stari Grad and Vrboska, sets the stage for an immersive outdoor adventure. Trails wind through aromatic lavender fields, sun-drenched vineyards, and pine forests, revealing sweeping views over the Pakleni Islands and the distant peaks of the Dinaric Alps. The interplay of Mediterranean light, the gentle rustle of olive branches, and the salty tang of sea air create an atmosphere that is both invigorating and deeply restorative, making Hvar a prime destination for hiking enthusiasts seeking both natural beauty and cultural depth.

Embarking on a hiking excursion here means traversing a mosaic of terrains, from ancient stone paths and rugged karst hills to shaded woodland tracks and coastal promenades. Typical routes might lead you from the cobbled streets of Hvar Town up to the 16th-century Fortica fortress, or along the southern cliffs towards the secluded coves near Sveta Nedjelja. Hikes can range from leisurely two-hour walks to more challenging full-day treks, with each step offering contrasts: the quiet solitude of inland trails, the lively chatter of cicadas, the cool shade beneath cypress trees, and the dazzling sunlight reflecting off limestone outcrops. Whether ascending the island’s highest point, Sveti Nikola, or following the ancient “Via Ager” between Stari Grad and Jelsa, hikers encounter a blend of history, nature, and sensory richness unique to Hvar.

Local guides on Hvar are passionate ambassadors of the island’s outdoor culture, combining deep knowledge of the terrain with a commitment to safety and authenticity. Great day out exploring the Pakleni Islands, the kayak across from Hvar to the islands seems daunting at first but was really not too bad once you get into the swing of things. The guys were great and told us where to go and how long each paddle would take, what would be hard or easy and some general tips on how to use the kayak. Really recommend this for anyone with a decent sense of adventure.

We had an afternoon slot of sea kayaking around Hvar which included some time to swim in the open water, snorkel around a bay and dinner in a little island restaurant. Would highly recommend this to anyone wanting a chance to explore the islands and have fun doing it!

We loved this! You are free to go on your own space and where you like. We got good instructions for where to go. The islands are beautiful and the kayking is a fun activity. We are not experienced kayakers at all, but it went really well, not too hard!
