Montréal stands out as a hiking destination where urban energy meets the tranquillity of nature. The city’s unique geography, set on an island in the St. Lawrence River and crowned by the iconic Mount Royal, offers a surprising variety of trails and landscapes within easy reach of downtown. Whether you are drawn to the dappled light filtering through maple forests, the gentle rise of wooded hills, or the fresh scent of pine after rain, hiking in Montréal invites you to experience the city’s vibrant outdoor culture. From the panoramic vistas atop Mount Royal Park to the peaceful riverside paths of Parc-nature de l’Île-de-la-Visitation, each route reveals a new facet of the region’s natural beauty, all within a stone’s throw of Montréal’s lively neighbourhoods.

Setting out on a hike in Montréal, you quickly sense the city’s rhythm blending with the calm of its green spaces. Trails range from short, accessible loops ideal for a morning stroll to longer, more challenging routes that wind through the Laurentians or along the banks of the Rivière des Prairies. The terrain varies from soft forest floors to rocky outcrops, with occasional wooden footbridges crossing streams or marshes. Hikers can expect a spectrum of experiences: the quiet rustle of leaves in Parc-nature du Bois-de-Liesse, the distant hum of city life from the summit of Mount Royal, or the golden glow of autumn foliage along the Lachine Canal. Most routes last between one and four hours, offering both gentle walks for beginners and more demanding treks for those seeking a challenge. The contrasts—urban skyline against wild greenery, birdsong mingling with city sounds—create a memorable and dynamic environment for every outing.

Local guides in Montréal bring a wealth of knowledge and a passion for the outdoors, ensuring that every hiking experience is both safe and enriching. These professionals are well-versed in the region’s flora, fauna, and history, and they provide essential equipment such as walking poles and, in colder months, crampons for icy trails. Safety is a priority, with guides adhering to strict standards and adapting routes to suit the group’s abilities and the day’s conditions. Montréal’s outdoor community is welcoming and inclusive, reflecting the city’s multicultural spirit. Logistics are straightforward, with many trailheads accessible by public transport or a short drive from the city centre, making it easy to fit a hike into any itinerary.

Hiking in Montréal is possible year-round, with each season offering its own character: spring brings a burst of green and cool breezes, summer offers long days and shaded paths, autumn dazzles with fiery colours, and winter transforms trails into crisp, snowy corridors. Most routes are accessible to beginners, though a reasonable level of fitness is recommended, especially for longer or steeper sections. The diversity of trails means there is something for everyone—families with children, solo adventurers, or experienced hikers seeking new terrain. Montréal’s hiking scene is as varied as its population, welcoming locals and visitors alike to explore on foot.

I enjoyed the dogs and the scenery. It was more work than anticipated since our dogs were slower than most

So many dogs!! Very fun activity where we got to drive the sled ourselves through the woods. Staff were very friendly and dogs seemed taken well care of. Definitely would recommend as easy day trip from Montreal

Fantastic, unique activity. Learned a lot, beautiful scenery and got to spend a lot of time with the dogs. The guides were so kind and helpful. The dogs were really well cared for. Nice touches with hot chocolate or warm spiced wine at the end of the adventure.

Such an amazing experience! Unlike anything we have ever done before. We did the dog sledding at Les Aventures Liguoriennes on a recommendation and couldn't have been happier that we did! Recommend 100%!
