Descending into the limestone cutouts carved by water on the right bank of the Verdon Gorge offers a thrilling initiation into canyoning in Baou Canyon near La Palud-sur-Verdon. Located in the heart of the Verdon Regional Natural Park, the Baou Canyon gradually narrows into wild rock walls, blending vertical rope progressions with refreshing aquatic sections. The erosion of the local limestone has shaped narrow gullies, natural water slides, and deep pools fed by fresh mountain water. Guided by the experienced ROCKSIDERS team, participants explore a pristine mineral environment where untouched nature meets exciting outdoor adventure.
The adventure begins at the ROCKSIDERS activity base in La Palud-sur-Verdon before a brief four-kilometre carpool drive to the trailhead. A 30-minute approach walk through Mediterranean garrigue leads to the canyon entrance, where state-certified instructors introduce rope handling techniques step-by-step. Participants learn to negotiate a succession of three dry abseils ranging from 10 to 15 metres high to enter the canyon bed safely. Once in the water, the descent progresses through a sequence of natural slides, aquatic abseils, and optional jumps into clear pools. Everyone is fully outfitted with high-end technical gear, including Vade Retro neoprene wetsuits, Petzl helmets, and Rodcle canyoning bags, ensuring maximum comfort and safety in small groups capped at 10 people.
