About the activity

Embark on a unique, challenging, and unforgettable outing in Svalbard's stunning Arctic landscapes with this hiking excursion to the Trollsteinen summit from Longyearbyen! Standing 850 metres tall, Trollsteinen is a popular destination in Svalbard for adventurers and sports enthusiasts alike. This beautiful mountain stands over the Larsbreen glacier and looks over Longyearbyen, offering incredible views to those brave enough to climb it.

On the day of your Trollsteinen hiking excursion, your expert Arctic Footsteps instructor will pick you up from your accommodations in Longyearbyen and take you to the starting point of the experience. They'll distribute crampons and headlamps if necessary, and after a thorough safety briefing, you'll set off!

The hike will start as you walk through a rugged moraine valley, then start the ascent toward the Larsbreen glacier. You'll cross the glacier and climb up a narrow ridge to reach the "Troll Stone", which gives the mountain its name. You'll enjoy some tea and biscuits with your instructor, as they tell you about local glaciers, geology, and life in Svalbard. If you'd like to bring some more substantial food to regain your strength, you're welcome to do so. You'll then make your way back down the mountain and toward the starting point of the experience with stunning memories (and photos) of Svalbard's breathtaking Arctic landscapes.

Keep in mind that the temperatures in the Arctic can vary between 5 and -30 degrees Celsius, and this activity does not include winter outerwear. This is why you should come prepared with a thermal or wool underlayer, fleece or wool mid layers, and windproof and waterproof outerwear (jacket and pants). You should also bring winter boots with a good grip, insulated gloves, a scarf, and sunglasses to protect against the sunlight's reflection on the snow, as well as any other essentials you may need (such as medication or extra snacks) to spend around 6 hours on this hiking excursion from Longyearbyen.

If you are an avid hiker or a nature enthusiast, you should not miss out on this wonderful hiking excursion to the Trollsteinen summit from Longyearbyen! It's a challenging, but non-technical experience not to be missed.
