In the far north, where the Arctic Ocean meets the rugged edges of Norway, Svalbard emerges as a destination that transforms the very idea of hiking. Here, the landscape is a living canvas—endless tundra, sculpted mountains, and deep fjords bathed in the shifting light of the midnight sun or the long twilight of polar autumn. Hiking in Svalbard is not just a journey through nature, but an immersion into a world where silence is broken only by the distant call of seabirds or the gentle crackle of ice underfoot. From the colourful houses of Longyearbyen to the wild valleys of Adventdalen and the dramatic coastline of Isfjorden, every step reveals a new facet of this remote archipelago’s stark beauty.

Setting out on foot in Svalbard, you encounter a terrain shaped by ice and time. Trails wind through mossy tundra, over rocky moraines, and along the edges of ancient glaciers. Guided treks often begin near Longyearbyen, following routes like the Platåfjellet ridge, which offers sweeping views over the settlement and the icy waters beyond. Other paths lead into the heart of the valley, where the air is crisp and the ground is scattered with Arctic flowers in summer. Hikes range from gentle half-day walks to more demanding full-day expeditions, with the ever-present possibility of spotting Svalbard reindeer or Arctic foxes. The contrasts are striking—moments of quiet reflection as you cross silent valleys, followed by the exhilaration of cresting a ridge to see endless snowfields stretching to the horizon. The play of light, from the golden glow of late summer evenings to the cool blues of early autumn, adds another layer to the experience.

Safety and expertise are central to hiking in Svalbard. Local guides, deeply familiar with the region’s unique challenges, lead every excursion, ensuring both security and a richer understanding of the environment. All necessary equipment is provided, including sturdy boots, weatherproof clothing, and, in some cases, polar bear protection. The unpredictable Arctic weather and the presence of wildlife mean that hiking here is always undertaken with careful planning and respect for nature’s power. Guides share insights into Svalbard’s geology, history, and ecology, connecting each walk to the broader story of life in the high Arctic. The outdoor culture in Svalbard is shaped by cooperation, resilience, and a profound respect for the land, making every hike a shared adventure.

The best season for hiking in Svalbard is from June to September, when the snow recedes and the tundra bursts into life. During these months, the climate is relatively mild, with temperatures ranging from 3 to 10°C, and the days are long, offering ample daylight for exploration. While many routes are accessible to beginners, a good level of physical fitness is essential, as even easy hikes can involve uneven ground and variable weather. Families, solo travellers, and groups alike will find options suited to their abilities, from relaxed nature walks to more challenging ascents. The experience is ideal for those seeking both adventure and a deeper connection with the Arctic landscape.

To hike in Svalbard is to step into a world where nature still holds sway, and every journey is shaped by the rhythms of the polar environment. Whether you are drawn by the promise of untouched wilderness, the chance to witness rare wildlife, or the simple joy of walking beneath an endless Arctic sky, Svalbard offers an experience that lingers long after you return. We originally booked this trip for the second day of our holiday. On the morning we suited up, did the briefing, and headed out on the snowmobiles - but sadly the snow melt meant we couldn’t get out of the first valley. Our guide tried really hard to find a route but sadly it just wasn’t meant to be. After this we weren’t optimistic but the Better Moments team were brilliant and managed to reschedule a different (slightly shorter trip) a few days later. They also refunded the price difference. The experience was amazing - highly recommend and we will be back to Svalbard to try the full experience - perhaps just a little earlier in the year to make sure we have enough snow to do it!

We made this tour during a wonderful sunshiny day and we had also the luck to view a lot of animals
The activity was great! We saw walruses, wales, puffins and belugas. We did a different tour considering the position of wildlife
