Sea kayaking in Svalbard offers a rare opportunity to explore one of the planet’s last true wildernesses from a unique perspective. Situated deep within the Arctic Circle, this Norwegian archipelago is a land of stark contrasts—where jagged mountains rise from icy fjords, and the midnight sun bathes the landscape in ethereal light. Paddling here means gliding through waters framed by blue-white glaciers, with the crisp air carrying the distant calls of seabirds and the occasional crack of calving ice. The sense of remoteness is profound, yet the scenery is alive with subtle colours: the deep blues of the sea, the shifting whites of snow, and the muted greens of moss clinging to rocky shores. Svalbard’s wild beauty, coupled with its rich polar history and thriving wildlife, makes it an exceptional destination for sea kayaking.

Embarking on a kayaking adventure in Svalbard is both serene and exhilarating. Typical routes often begin near Longyearbyen, the archipelago’s main settlement, and venture into the vast Isfjorden or along the coastlines of Spitsbergen, the largest island. Depending on the chosen itinerary, excursions can last from a few hours to multi-day expeditions, each offering a different rhythm. The waters are generally calm in sheltered fjords, but conditions can shift quickly, adding a dynamic edge to the journey. Paddlers may find themselves weaving between floating ice, passing beneath towering cliffs, or pausing to watch seals bask on ice floes. The silence is striking, broken only by the gentle splash of paddles and the distant rumble of glaciers. The contrasts are constant—moments of peaceful solitude punctuated by the thrill of spotting a walrus or the distant silhouette of a polar bear.

Local guides in Svalbard are seasoned professionals, deeply familiar with the region’s unpredictable weather and challenging terrain. They provide high-quality sea kayaks, drysuits, thermal layers, and all necessary safety equipment, ensuring participants remain comfortable and secure in the Arctic environment. Safety is paramount, with guides trained in cold-water rescue and wilderness first aid. Briefings cover essential techniques and environmental awareness, allowing even beginners to feel confident on the water. The outdoor culture here is rooted in respect for nature and self-reliance, with logistics carefully planned to adapt to changing ice and weather conditions. Group sizes are kept small to minimise impact and maximise the sense of immersion.

The best time for sea kayaking in Svalbard is from June to September, when the fjords are ice-free and the midnight sun extends daylight into the early hours. While many trips are accessible to beginners, participants should be in good physical condition, as paddling in cold water and variable weather requires stamina and resilience. Adventurous families, solo travellers, and groups of friends will all find options suited to their experience level, from gentle introductory tours to challenging multi-day expeditions. The experience is open to those with a spirit of exploration and a readiness for the Arctic’s ever-changing moods.

Exploring Svalbard by sea kayak is an invitation to connect with the Arctic’s raw beauty and quiet grandeur. Whether you seek the calm of gliding through silent fjords or the excitement of close encounters with wildlife, this is an adventure that lingers long after you return home. We originally booked this trip for the second day of our holiday. On the morning we suited up, did the briefing, and headed out on the snowmobiles - but sadly the snow melt meant we couldn’t get out of the first valley. Our guide tried really hard to find a route but sadly it just wasn’t meant to be. After this we weren’t optimistic but the Better Moments team were brilliant and managed to reschedule a different (slightly shorter trip) a few days later. They also refunded the price difference. The experience was amazing - highly recommend and we will be back to Svalbard to try the full experience - perhaps just a little earlier in the year to make sure we have enough snow to do it!

We made this tour during a wonderful sunshiny day and we had also the luck to view a lot of animals
The activity was great! We saw walruses, wales, puffins and belugas. We did a different tour considering the position of wildlife
